Chapter 50- Adjusting to Our New Life

Will POV:

"Zoe, sweetheart you are apart of this family. We love you and can't imagine life without you. What made you think that you weren't?" I say trying to calm Zoe.

"I don't know, a girl in my class said that you aren't my real parents. She said you just felt bad for me because I have cancer and that's why you had me live with you."

"Zoe we took you in because we love you. Yes you have cancer but that didn't impact our decision at all. When Mommy first saw you in the ER she immediately liked you. And the moment she learned you didn't have a home she immediately asked me about taking you in. And of course I said yes. We love you so much and I cannot imagine this family without you in it."

Natalie POV:

"Will, I've been thinking lately. Since Zoe has a scan coming up, which will determine whether or not she's cancer free, maybe we should do something to celebrate. And we've been putting this off since her and I have both been so sick but at this point there's no reason to wait. I want to adopt Zoe."

"Natalie you know I'd love to but it will take a long time and it could be stressful... are you sure you can handle this extra stress. You know with the cancer and the new baby on the way?"

"Will I can handle it. All I want is for our kids to be happy and this is a necessary step we need to take. Are you in?"

"Of course I am."

Will and I have officially started the process about a week ago. Our adoption agent did say it may take a little longer since I'm so sick and in the hospital. However said the fact that we've been fostering her helps a little bit.

I've been going to physical therapy everyday and I've made some improvements. And Dr. Hansen and my physical therapist have both agreed that if I keep doing well I can go home soon. Which is all I want. I want to restore some normalcy to Zoe and Owen's lives.

Will POV:

Since they've said Natalie may get discharged soon I've started making adjustments to the house. I've moved furniture around to make it easier for Natalie to navigate around. I've also added a stair lift so she can go up the stairs.

Of course I haven't told her any of this. I want it all to be a surprise. Even Zoe and Owen have helped. While they don't necessarily understand everything we need to do they are helping me move things and are always willing to go to the store with me.

And they even offered to help me with the ramp I'm building by the front and back door. But they're obviously only using toy tools, but it's still adorable.

Natalie POV:

"Well, Natalie, we have an appointment tomorrow to discuss treatment however until then I don't see why you can't go home. But keep in mind any signs of anything getting worse or that you're ill you have to come back in immediately. I very rarely allow patients to go home before we discuss treatment plans but I figured you're both doctors and know the signs to look out for. So, be careful, alright?" Dr. Hansen says while we sign discharge papers.

"Of course. Thank you so much Dr. Hansen. We'll see you tomorrow I guess." I say as I place my hands on the wheels of my chair ready to leave.

However, Will starts pushing me out of the room before I can push myself. I look back at the room one last time. Thank god I'm going home. I've received so many bad news in this one room.

When we get home I almost cry. Will had built a ramp so I could get inside, on my own. And then I see Zoe and Owen holding a sign that says 'welcome home mommy!'

Will helps me out of the car and I immediately wheel over and hug both of the kids. I've missed them so much.

We head inside and I can't believe what I see. Will had completely transformed the inside of our house. Not only did he push the furniture back so I could get around but he put a stair lift on the stairs so i could get up on my own.

I immediately kiss Will in thanks and hug the kids as tears stream down my face. I can't believe they'd do all this for me.
