That evening, after her live interview on tv, Ava went to work. She had only recently started her new job at a gas station just on the outskirts of town, which is where her and Noni moved to about ten years ago to have some space from the town and their questions about their lives after the incident. Ever since that night, their lives have been split in two; before Millie ran away and after.
Most people, including Ava herself, think that because she wasn't there when the murders were happening that it should have no effect on her. But it did. After all, she's lost her sister. Millie leaving her had made her feel alone and like she was the last one standing, as pretty much everyone in her bloodline has either died, forgetten her, doesn't want to be involved in her life, or ran away.
Luckily Winona was ready to adopt her and take care of her just as she watched her older sister and Finn run down that hallway and away from the cops. Though it was a little hard for Noni to take care of Ava because after all of that chaos, she was fired. Her supervisor didn't explain why she was fired and she didn't ask as she was just in shock. She wasn't expecting a promotion or a raise or anything, but she definitely was not expecting to be let off. But now she works as a tailor in the neighboring city of Hawkins, Indiana. She works peacefully and unseen in a room with sewing equipment. It was just a job for her to keep for a couple more decades before she retires.
The bell above the gas station door rung, signaling that a customer just walked in. Ava was sweeping the floors in front of the freezers when she looked up and saw an older red haired woman standing at the counter in a black trench coat and leggings. She noticed that the young woman working in the gas station alone and quickly looked away awkwardly. Ava felt cool as she still held the broom in her hand and approached Sadie Sink calmly, but with intimidation and she spoke in her American accent that she had acclimated after living around Americans her whole life. "What the fuck are you doing here?" She got so close to the lady in black that her chest was only centimeters away from hers.
Sadie couldn't talk, due to the lack of muscle that would help her with speaking. She tried signing to Ava with sign language that she had learned while in prison just to help her when she got out. 'I am just buying cigarettes before I go home.' Her slim fingers quickly go. Ava didn't understand it and she kind of felt embarrassed about not knowing sign language. But it gave her an advantage to speak and not be spoken over or have Sadie defend herself and her actions. "You ruined her life. You ruined my life. You ruined almost everyone's life. I'd like to think that if you didn't fuck things up in the first place, my sister would be here and happy and so careless. She'd have a normal happy life, we both would. I wouldn't have to wonder if she's dead or not, or if she remembers me at all. You fucked that up and if I knew what was going on all those years ago, I would have just killed you myself."
Sadie shook her head before glancing over at the counter and spotting a little basket of pens. She took one as well as a little notepad behind the counter and started writing as quicksand her small hands could write. 'u think tht me n those other kids ruind mills life? finn did jus as much damage as the rest of us. he stole ur sis n now shes wanted 4 doin wat she did 2 me. she could hav killed me.' Ava read all of that and just shook her head. She looked up at the ginger. "I wish they did kill you. I really wish they did, so I wouldn't have to stand right here in front of a rapist." Ava said so quietly as Sadie bowed her head.
She left the gas station without her cigarettes, got in her car and then drove to her uncle's house, where she had been staying since she was released from jail. Ava stood there, watching the door and picturing herself beating Sadie with the broom in her hand. She never wanted to see her face again.
The young brunette stepped behind the counter if the gas station and sat the broom up in the corner before reaching for a shelf below for a spray bottle of mystery chemicals and a paper towel. She threw Sadie's note in the trash before spritzing the acrylic counter top and then wiping it down with a sheet from the roll of paper towels. She liked for the gas station to be clean and not so messy. She felt that it made costumers more comfortable and welcome. And she didn't want to work in a dirty environment.
