3rd Person POV
It took the boys a half hour to finally see Mrs. Kaspbrak. New York City did not have fast transportation, plus the front desk lady was in a pissy mood and kept asking why Richie was wearing a shirt that was cutting off his circulation.
But they finally made it. Sort of. Eddie was standing outside of the hospital room door, scared to go in.
The doctors had informed him that she had suffered a heart attack while at the grocery store.
"Hey," Richie said softly, noticing the anxiety present on Eddie's face. He took his hand in his own and squeezed it lightly.
Eddie drew a shuddering breath in, "I think it would be best if you stayed out here," his voice was shaking as he stared at the door to the room, "my mom would actually die from this heart attack if all of a sudden Richie fucking Tozier was standing at her beside holding her son's hand."
Richie nodded in agreement, "I'll be sending my support from out here."
"Do you think she's gonna die?"
Richie scoffed, "nah, the spiteful ones always live."
Eddie rolled his eyes and let go of Richie's hand. Then he opened the door and slowly trudged his way farther into the room.
He almost started crying when he saw his mother all hooked up to wires laying all weak on the hospital bed that barely held someone of her size.
"Momma?" he asked quietly, waiting for a response.
But none came. She was sleeping heavily.
As Eddie stared at his mother laying so fragile, he knew that he had to stay and help her. He knew he had to keep his mom healthy.
She may not have accepted who he was and she may have been an overall bitch, but she was still Eddie's mother. And his mother was just scared. She was scared of Eddie getting hurt, of him going through any pain. Her actions were misguided, but her heart was there.
Mrs. Kaspbrak was wheezing and didn't answer Eddie.
He walked forward and held her hand, "I'm so sorry momma," he whispered. Somehow he felt guilty, like him making out with Richie had caused this, not her weight.
Richie was still standing outside of the door, watching the exchange. He saw how broken and scared Eddie looked.
"Eddie," he called quietly, trying not to gain his mom's attention.
Eddie sniffed and walked back to Richie. He immediately wrapped his arms around Richie and buried his head into his chest.
Richie looked down at the boy, it hurt him to see Eddie suffer so much.
"I think I should go," he said softly.
Eddie immediately looked up, confused and scared.
"You need to be here with your mom," Richie sighed, he could feel a lump in his throat forming, "and we both know that I can't be around her."
Eddie was silent, thinking it over. He knew Richie was right, even though it made him want to scream just thinking about losing Richie again.
Finally he nodded, but still kept his arms around Richie, "okay," he agreed. Tears were dripping down his cheeks, they were for Richie.
Richie smiled sadly and kissed Eddie's forehead, but Eddie wanted more and pressed his lips to Richie's.
It was only a soft, brief kiss. A goodbye kiss.
"Call me?" Richie asked.
"Of course." Eddie finally let go of Richie, "goodbye," he said trying to hold in the tears that wear building in his eyes.
Richie couldn't speak without sobbing, he just nodded and bit his lip. Then he walked away.
And Eddie went to his mom's side again, promising himself to call Richie as soon as his mom was out of this hospital.
But Eddie never called.
And Richie had forgotten all about Eddie's promise.
