Chapter 7: Can't Tell

My heart sings as I almost skip into the house, Roman make me act like a Disney princess sometimes. I skip and dance and smile, not things I usually do but Roman must be a wizard or something. He's the only person who can get me to do that stuff.

I head up the my room and pass my dad walking downstairs. I lay on my bed and put on my headphones, I'll probably be deaf by the time I'm 21 if I blast Paramour any louder. Dad always complains it's too loud, and that if there were an emergency... or if I needed you... so after remembering this I leave one ear off on my headphones and continue to listen to my music. I find myself doing that a lot with stuff my dad says, he calls it discipline but I call it control freak paranoia. The worst thing is I still listen anyway. As I'm listening to my music I start to hear muffled yelling through the thin walls of my bedroom. I brush it off, but I hear it again, it's a bit clearer this time.
"How am I supposed to trust you?!" Dad yells from downstairs, I wonder who he's talking to. I know for a fact it's not mom. "You stay away from him!" I hear him yell again. Maybe I should go downstairs, I toss the idea around in my head for a while then I hear the door slam shut. Whoever he was yelling at must've left because the house falls silent and although I'm curious, I then remember what Deceit told me. 'Curiosity killed the cat Virge.'

I wake up fairly early after hunting that night and start getting ready. I shower and get dressed then pack my things. I'm expecting a text from Ro any minute now saying he'll be here soon...but nothing. It's odd and highly out of character for Princey but I'm gonna have to leave, I can talk to him at school. I get to school and there he is, hanging with Patton and Logan. I walk up to them and hesitate asking Roman why he didn't text. What if he was busy? What if he just forgot? I decide to just drop it. "Hey guys." I say, going to take Roman's hand when he says.
" I have to go to the bathroom, brb." He looked almost terrified when I approached him. As he darts down the hallway, I give the others a strange look and they just shrug at me. I walk to class with Patton, who's the dad friend of our friend group. We all call him Dad (except Logan, unless they're alone.) he's always there for us and doing his best to make us happy, just like a real Dad. I think Roman just loves giving people nicknames. Speaking of Roman, I really hope he's okay.
"I'm sure he's fine kiddo." Patton has the strange ability to read my mind.
"Huh?"
"I could see it on your face Virge , I know you're worried about him." He places a hand on my shoulder. "He'll be fine. See you after class kiddo." I smile a little.
"See ya."
"Pick you up at six, don't be late now." He puts his hands on his hips.
"I won't Dad." He giggles and steps inside the classroom and I walk away smiling. Patton always knows how to cheer me up, he knows how to cheer everyone up. I just wish my old man would take care of himself sometimes, but I try my best to help him out.

I know I'm always worried but something is definitely up with Roman. He avoids me the whole day and he refuses to talk to me. I start to worrie that maybe I've done something wrong or I've upset,which I'm pretty sure I haven't but still. What if I have? What if I've said something so awful and unacceptable he's now refusing to talk to me? I take a deep breath before my mind can wander any further. On the way home I pass the alleyway, a hand pulls me into the shadows of the alleyway and I yelp slightly.
"Roman?" He puts his hand over my mouth.
"Ssshhhh." I scowl in protest and he take his hand away, I start talking a little quieter.
"What is up with you? You've been avoiding me all day." I didn't mean to sound that harsh.
"I know Storm Cloud, I'm sorry." Darn he always gets me with the pet names. I just roll my eyes.
"I want an explanation." I say, folding my arms and tapping my foot. He sighs and runs his fingers through his hair, he looks genuinely stressed. I drop the pissed off facade and he continues.
"Virgil I can't really give you one."
"Why?"
"Because it'd put us in danger."
"How?"
"I can't tell you." He looks me in the eyes and puts a hand on my cheek, he sighs sadly and kisses me. "I'm sorry Virgil, I'll explain when it's safe." I look at the ground anxiously. "I don't wanna do this ya know?"
"But what even is this?"
"I told you I can't tell you." He takes my hand. "But for the safety of us both, I just have to stay away from you."
"...."
"I love you Virgil."
"I-I love you too..." He lifts my head and kisses me again.
"You should home, the sun's setting. I don't want you to get burnt." I rolls my eyes and smile half heartedly.
"Okay."
"Bye."
"Bye."
