"You don't need to be nervous, sweetheart. We won't be there for long." I said, trying my best to sound reassuring as I placed my hands on his chest and kissed him.

"I love you." He said softly, and I knocked on my parents' front door.
"I love you too, Sami."

The door swung open to reveal my younger sister Janie.
"Hey, Jay," I smiled, leaning in for a hug, "this is Sami."

"Well, hey, Sami!" She said loudly, patting him on the shoulder excitedly and inviting the two of us inside. We stood in the hallway away from the mass of people for a few minutes.

"So who's here?" I asked, running a comb through my hair.
"Well, aside from me, mom and dad, the only other people so far is Auntie Lauren and Uncle James, Auntie Christa and whoever her fella is, and Dougie's just popped out with Chloe to get some stuff for Mom."
"What do you mean the 'only' other people? It may as well be full!" I scoffed, and took Sami's hand in mine to reassure him. I felt him squeeze it gently, and I glanced over at him.
"You okay, sweetheart?" I asked softly, earning a reluctant nod from him.
The three of us walked through to the garden and the first person to come over to myself and Sami was my uncle.

"Uncle James! It's been so long!" I cried excitedly, hugging him and laughing.
"Way too long, kiddo!" He replied, a jolly smile on his face.
"This is Sami, by the way! He's in a band." I said eagerly, knowing full well how much my uncle loved music.
"Great to meet you! I used to be in a band, you know." Uncle James began to talk, and I smiled as I saw Sami relax a little.

'I'll be two seconds.' I mouthed as I went over to my mother.

"Hi, mom." I greeted, as she looked up from the barbecue.
"Oh, hello, y/n. Is that your fella then?"
"It sure is. Do you wanna come and meet him?" I asked, as she nodded eagerly.

"Christa! Do me a favour and come and watch the barbecue, will you?" She called, following me over to Sami.

"Sorry Uncle James, I just have to steal Sami for a sec." I apologised, taking his hand in mine and introducing him to my mother.

"And what is it that you do, Sami?" She asked in a sickly sweet tone. I loved my mother, but she was completely inconsiderate when it came to boyfriends.

"Mom, give him a minute to breathe." I said, as Sami squeezed my hand again. I could always tell that he was nervous when he did that, which made me nervous too.

"I'm in a band, ma'am," He said quietly, "I play bass."
"A band." My mother said simply, and Sami nodded.
"A rock band." He eluded, and I smiled at my mother despite her sour expression.

"Lovely. Now, y/n, if you'd come and help me with the salad and the dips?"
"I won't be long, sweetheart," I said gently to Sami, placing a kiss on his cheek, "Will you be okay out here for a little while?"

He nodded, and I kissed him again, doing so despite my mother's shocked and distasteful expression.

"You know where Janie is if you get nervous, alright? She doesn't mean no harm, and neither does my uncle James."

He nodded again and I followed my mother to the kitchen, where my auntie Christa stood with my cousin Chloe and my father.

"Listen, y/n. We don't like him. He can't speak for himself anyway, and what sort of career is a bass guitarist? I mean, really, all of the nice men around here. And you've chosen to be with him? Really, I'd expect better of you." My mother scoffed, turning towards my father, aunt and cousin.

"Excuse me? What do you mean 'we' don't like him? Firstly, you three haven't even met him, so I don't give a shit what you think. Secondly, if you really care that much about what he does for a living and not how happy I am, then I don't know if I want to come here again for a very long time. I love that man with all of my heart, and maybe he is a bass guitarist, but I'd rather that than date some upper-middle class bank teller who looks like he has a pole up his arse, thank you very much." I retorted, folding my arms for emphasis. My mother, father and aunt gasped, and my cousin ran out of the room, screaming about how she hated me. Part of me wanted to laugh in their faces, because I knew how shallow they were being.

"And now, I'm going back home. Just me, the love of my life, and Janie, Auntie Lauren and Uncle James if they'd like to come, too. Tell Dougie I said hi, and if he still wants to be horrible to my boyfriend after the last time I saw him, then I don't want anything to do with him, either. Got it?"

I turned to leave, before stopping myself.

"Oh, and you can shove your dips where the sun doesn't shine." I concluded, tipping a bowl of hummus over my aunt's head.

I grinned to myself as I walked into the garden, away from the furious screams of my parents and the cries from my aunt because her 'new hair was ruined.'

"Come on, sweetheart, we're going." I told Sami, a smile on my face as I took his hand in mine. He breathed a sigh of relief and I turned to my sister and uncle.

"You guys wanna come over?" I asked, recieving an excited nod from my sister and a hum of agreement from my uncle. He gestured my aunt over, and I greeted her properly.

"Y/n, darling, why does your mother look so angry?" My aunt asked slightly nervously, and I laughed as I saw my mother, red-faced and screaming, in the doorway of the house.

"Long story. I'll tell you when we get home."

"That's our y/n." My uncle laughed, as I finished telling the story. Sami sat wide-eyed and open-mouthed, struggling to find words to say.

"You always did stick up for yourself." My aunt said, still rosy-cheeked from laughing.

"Your mother's gonna hate me even more now." Sami said defeatedly, and I just shrugged.

"The only family I need is in this room." I smiled as I lay my head on Sami's shoulder.

"I love you." He whispered.
"I love you too."

"Aww, young love." Janie cooed loudly, and I giggled as Sami's cheeks became red.

"Drinks, anyone?" I offered, standing up to go to the kitchen. Sami followed me, in order to assist me in carrying several cans of Coke.

"They love you, you know." I told him, and he smiled to himself.

"I'm glad that somebody does." He chuckled, and I shook my head.

"Hey, I love you, loser." I said, kissing his cheek.
