An attack is coming

Tiifu and her mother ran as fast as they could, without exhausting themself too much. Both of them were extremly alert and looked out, to see, if they could spot any of the outlanders. They didn't, which they were at the same time very grateful and worried about. Tiifus head swirled with questions, but she didn't ask them, because she wanted to keep quiet.

They needed less then a forth of the time they usually needed to cover the distance between Pride Rock and their cave. Tiifu was panting hard, when they arrived at Pride Rock and went up the steps. They burst into the lair and accidentally scared everyone inside, when they woke up from the noise.

"Your majesty.", Tahadhari gasped between two breaths. "The outlanders are coming. And Zira and her lions are with them." "What?", Simba asked shocked. "They're coming from the backlands. We came here as fast as we could. But I have no idea how long it will take for them to get here." "Kifahari, Haki, go outside and guard the entrance, we'll follow soon.", Simba ordered and the two lionesses ran outside. He turned to the rest of his pride. "The cubs and young ones stay here, along with Nala and three other lionesses. The rest of us goes outside, to intercept the outlanders, if the try to attack us. Tahadhari, you and two lionesses go to the herds and warn them, then you come back."

Kion stood up and went to the entrance. "I'm going to gather the guard.", he said, but was stopped by Simba. "No, you stay here. Zazu will get the guard. I need you here right now." Kion hesitated for a moment, but then he nodded. He stepped aside, as Tahadhari and two other lionesses ran outside. Simba and the rest of the pride followed a few seconds after, after Nala had chosen, which lionesses were to stay in the cave. Tiifu and Zuri also ran towards the entrance, but Kion interceptet them. "You stay here. It seems like this will be a huge attack and I don't think you're really ready for something like that. You can defend the caves, if some outlanders manage to get here." They hesitated for a moment, but then nodded. "If you say so.", they both said. They went back further inside the cave and Kion followed the rest of the pride outside.

Tiifu and Zuri looked around and saw, that the lionesses along with the cubs went entirely to the back of the caves. At the end, they walked into a little side cave with a small entrance, that could easily be overlooked. They quickly followed them and laid down next to Kiara, who was arguing with her mother. "But Mom, why can't I go help outside? As a queen, part of my duty surely is to guarante the safety of the pridelands and I can't do that, if I'm stuck back here." "This is an emergency situation.", Nala replied. "We will teach you how to fight in a more controlled enviroment. And now try to keep quiet. If someone does come inside Pride Rock, they shouldn't immediately know, where we're hiding." Kiara nodded and lay down. She looked over to her friends and then to the other lionesses and cubs. She would have loved to know, what was going on outside right now, but she also was sure, that she didn't really wanna know.

Anga pierced through the black sky like water through a landscape. She basically saw nothing, but she was sure, that she flew high enough to not fly into any obstacles. She hated not being able to see anything, but on the other wing, she was flying in the middle of the night, so it was partially her own fault, if it wouldn't be for the shadows, she wanted to intercept. She had only flown once during the night before and it had ended with a broken leg, which had forced her to go ask Rafiki for help. She was not intending to have to do that again.

She hadn't had any visual contact, after getting up in the air, so she just flew and hoped, to see, hear or smell something. She flapped her wings and glided, listening for any sounds. Then she flapped again and repeated the procedure. She sighed. She didn't hear anything. And the sky was large. The shadows, she was chasing, could be literally anywhere. They could be flying in every direction and at every altitude. Then she picked something up. A very faint smell. Barely noticable. Smoke. This smoke had to be from the fire sticks, the vultures used, because the volcano was too far away and she didn't spot any fires on the ground. And when she could smell smoke, that ment, that the vultures had already passed her, because smoke couldn't travel faster than the vultures could fly. And that also meant, that she was either the same level or higher then the vultures, because smoke goes upwards.

Anga flew a sharp half circle and flew to, what she assumed to be, Pride Rock. It was difficult to tell and she could only guess, roughly remembering where her resting spot had been and what distance she probably had covered so far. But it wasn't important, where the vultures where going. It was important, that Anga would stop them, before they got there. It wasn't an easy task, following the smell of the smoke through the air, but Anga managed. Pretty soon, she began to hear other wings flapping. And finally, she spotted them. Or at least the fire sticks, they were holding.

She picked up speed and closed in on the vultures. She reached the one, that was the farthest behind and grabbed him with her talons. He yelled and dropped his fire stick. She yanked him to the side and he screamed, as he was thrown away by an unseen force. Anga then swiftly dived after the fire stick, cought it mid air and blew it out, before letting it go and climbing back up. Understandibly, the vultures were very confused. "What is the reason of making that noise?", Mzingo asked. "Something attacked me from behind and threw me out of formation." "We are not prepared to defend ourself in an attack during the night. What should we do?", one of the vultures asked.

Anga had climbed above them and dove down to attack them again. She struck a vulture in the back, who shrieked in response and started to fall down. "I see him.", a vulture yelled and Anga looked up. He went down, but she made a sharp turn and avoided him. She flapped her wings to gain altitude, but the vulture she was closing on from beneath must have heard her. He struck blindly with his talons and the fire stick and she stopped flapping her wings, just gliding instead. He probably assumed, that the attacker had flown off, to disturb another vulture and stopped striking. At this exact moment she speed upwards and into him. They vulture let out a confused yell and they both fell from the sky. Anga recognized the voice being Mzingos.

He struck at her and this time hit her. The fire stick hit her wing and his talon hit her in the face. Anga yelled out in pain and let him go, falling down like a rock. She managed to open her wings and regain balance after a time span, that was way too long for her opinion and flew back up. She looked at her wing, but she couldn't see much, which she was partially grateful for, because she didn't really want to see it. Every single flap of her wing hurt her and the spot Mzingo had struck her with his talon hurt as well. He had just barely missed her eye. But she wasn't done yet. She spotted the fire sticks again and speed up, so she could surprise them from the front. After she was some distance in front of them, she climbed until she was at the same height and flew back at them. She looked at the fire sticks, but suddenly, the ones, that were right in front of her just disappeared. She narrowed her eyes, wondering how they could just vanish like that.

Then she realised, how it had happened, but it was too late to react. She rammed into the unseen vulture and was almost knocked out cold. She went totally out of control and tumbled to the ground in an uncontrollable spiral, screeching in terror, as she closed in on the ground.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays and a Happy New Year everyone

This is my little christmas present for you. I had finished this chapter two days ago, but decided to publish it today instead. I hope you like it. I had a lot of fun writing this. I'm planning for the next chapters and my ideas for them so far seem promising, but only time will tell.

Until the next time
