Ch. 6 In the Shadows

A Dauntless man named Max introduced Dauntless and explained some stuff but the one thing that stuck with Erin was this; Here in Dauntless we value most Faction before blood. Then Max asked for the first jumper, and an Abnegation girl stepped forward. She took a breath and then jumped. After 30 seconds Max had the next jumper, a Candor jump and so it went. Everyone jumping at 30 second intervals until it was just Erin, Chase, and Max. Then Erin stepped forward and quickly jumped. She felt like a soaring bird. A bird in a nosedive about to go soaring back up. Something inside of Erin burst free. Her Dauntless side. Erin hit a net with a bunch of arms and grabbed a hand then hopped off. The Dauntless headquarters was all underground. And as Erin looked around she saw blue lamps on the walls all around and the headquarters kept going down into the earth. The light was dim. She recalled that wild feeling and relished it for a moment, until Chase hit the net with an ow and climbed off.
"Hello initiates. I am Four and this is Dauntless. The Dauntless born initiates will go with Lauren and I will teach the transfers. I'm going to show the transfers to their quarters and a tour. Come on," a tall muscular man said waving his arms and walking off.
Four walked forward and and showed them the training room, the chasm, and then they headed to the dining hall. Erin and Chase sat down with Erin next to Will, a fellow Erudite, and Chase next to a tall boy named Albert. The Abnegation girl was across from her, and her name was Tris, the Candor was Christina. Tris had no idea what a hamburger was and it was pretty funny. Erin saw Four looking at Tris weirdly and looked kind of mean.
Erin also noticed that Christina and Tris didn't seem to notice her or Chase.
Chase nudged her and pointed with his head to Tris, who looked nervous with Four looking at her and talking to her. Erin nodded.
Suddenly the doors open and in comes a young man, who looked to be about Four's age and everyone quieted down. He had piercings almost everywhere on his face. He had greasy long hair and his eyes were cold as snakes.
Christina whispered, "Who's that?"
Four said back, "He's a Dauntless leader."
"Seriously?! But he is so young!"
"Age doesn't matter here."
Then Eric comes to Erin's table and sits down next to Four. "Well, aren't you going to introduce me?"
Four introduces Tris and Christina.
Again Erin and Chase were shadows that were merely acknowledged.
