"Are you sure?" Kai asks me. We're at the beach, waiting for the famed Destiny's Bounty. Kai had asked If I wanted to meet his 'brothers'. And I had said yes. Well, Bf/n agreed for me. I think she would have killed me if I had said no anyway.
"I'm sure." I say confidently.
He takes my hand and gives it a bit of a squeeze. I lean up on my tiptoes to kiss his cheek.
It had been a few weeks since we started dating. First, Bf/n 'had' to meet him and then she had to be the protective best friend and have the 'if you have one crazy hair out of line, I'll shave your head' talks. And Kai was quick to reassure her the moment his hair was at risk.
Then we had to find a date that we were all available. 'All' being him, his heam and I. That also had a place that would be relatively empty to give the Bounty a chance to land.
And that has not happened for a few weeks. Until today, that is.
But while we waited, Kai took me out for Chen's noodle house one night for a date. He said he wanted to introduce me to a friend of his who worked there. Unfortunately, she wasn't working that night. Kai seemed disappointed.
Because it's only mid-late-ish April, the beach is completely deserted. Just the cold, rocky shore, the tumbling waves, Kai and me.
There's a loud rumble of an engine above us. I look up, squinting slightly to avoid the sun and see the hull of a beautiful flying ship. The aged, dark wood, the cool silver steel of the thrusters, the red and gold dragon head at the bow.
"They're a few minutes late," Kai yelles over the sound of the old ship and wraps his arm around my shoulder, pulling me close. I lean into him and he smiles.
Kai holds the rope latter steady so I can climb up, he follows close behind. By the time I reach the deck, my arms hurt and I'm out of breath. I run, I don't climb. My boyfriend laughs at my patheticness. And I stick my tongue out at him.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means I beat you... to the top," I gasp.
A boy in a green hoodie walks up to Kai. Lloyd, I think. The two do a little bro hug or whatever they want to call it and wait for the rest of the team to walk up.
Nya nudges my shoulder. "So you're the girl that knocked my brother off his feet." I laugh, remembering the way we first met.
"More like he just fell for me," she looks me up and down and smiles. "I like her," she stated, turning to the rest of the team.
"Guys, this is y/n," Kai introduces me. He looks at the team.
I give a little wave. "I know who you are," They smile. But it feels fake.
I turn to Kai. "But introduce them anyway," he looks at me. "All I know are what the Gossip magazines play you to be. For all I know, you might have different names."
Nya nudges Zane. "Now I know I like her." I smile. At least I got the family approval.
"Okay then. This is the Cake Devourer," he motions to Cole, who is almost transparent in the light. Then to Jay. " The mouth of lightning," said blue ninja makes a noise of protest at his 'name'. "Tin can, the resident green bean and Nya."
I wondered why he didn't give her a nickname before Jay whispered in my ear. "We know better than to make fun of Nya. Even if it's just a nickname."
Cole invites me to follow him below deck into what looks like a living room. There's a TV, sandwiched between two shelves full of movies and video games, two couches and a love seat, a coffee table, and a bunch of bean bags piled up in a corner. One wall was covered in pictures and memoirs, where the other held a white board table labeled 'cooking and chores'. It felt homey.
