Toningt was supposed to be a nice night. Day of the Departed celebrations were, as the name suggests, supposed to celebrate the departed with your loved ones, going house to house in silly costumes and collecting candy. Honoring those who were no longer with us.
Not watching Kai bleed out, about to join them.
Tonight was not supposed to go like this at all.
...
"Now, hold still!"
I laugh as Kai fidgets in the chair. I'm standing behind him smoothing his hair back for his vampire costume. It's a losing battle.
"It just feels so weird," he complains, reaching up to touch his head. I smack the back of his hand with the comb. "Hey!"
"No touching!" I scold. "You'll ruin the miniscule progress I've made."
I brush my witches cape back over my shoulder and attack Kai's hair again.
Nya walks in in her astronaut costume. "Are you still trying to get his hair to lay flat?" She asks, leaning against the door frame. "Sweetie, you'll be here for days doing that!"
I put the comb down and look at her. In the chair, Kai's hair takes advantage of my yielding and poofs back into place like I never touched it. Kai and Nya laugh.
"Come on, help me with the final decorations on deck. Cole's dad is going to be here soon with the rest of the guests." Under her breath she continued. "Why Dareth thinks we need a sponsor Day of the Departed party is beyond me."
Kai jumps at the idea of getting out of hair styling and follows his sister. I clean up quickly before heading up aswell.
Above deck, the Destiny's Bounty looks like it came strait from the cursed realm. Green and black cobwebs string across the railing, figurehead and door frames. Lanterns threaded on strings overhead provide light for the rest of the ninja as they help set up. On the horizon is the last remains of sun light. Just a brushstroke of light blue and orange. Through the lights I can see the half moon. According to Misako's books, next year is supposed to be a Ying-yang eclipse. I can't believe that I'll be able to see one.
Back on deck, Lloyd the poorly dressed mummy walks up to me with his arms full of trays of candied apples, almost running into me if I hadn't stepped out of the way. "Oh, sorry, Y/n. Didn't see you there. Uh, actually, could you help me with these? Cole and Zane are setting the table over there." He nods his head to the far side of the ship.
"Sure," I say as I take a few of the stacked trays. Now he can actually see over his tower of treats. He grins at me and continues his walk.
On the other side of the deck, Cole is straightening a table cloth decorated with little spider silhouettes in his ghost friendly pirate costume. He looks around confused as Lloyd and I unload our hull onto the table, Zane and Jay coming up behind us with punch and a 7 layer dip. It looks like Jay was able to convince Zane to dress us as the cyborg companion character 'Ti-zz two-four' from one of Fritz Donagan movies. Jay himself dressed as the main hero. "Where's the chips?" Cole asks Fritz.
Jay freezes, two inches from the table. He groans. "That's what I forgot to pick up!" He says, smacking his forehead with his hand. (Luckily Zane caught the punch bowl)
