"Alright.. here we go."

Logan Croft woke up, just as if it was any average morning. And it was.

He woke up in his normal apartment, got dressed into his normal work clothes, and sat in his normal seat on the bus to his normal job selling normal paper to normal people.

What Logan didn't know was that today would be the start of a life that.. wasn't normal.

"Mr. Croft? May I see you in my office?"

Logan stood up, and walked into his boss's office, and sat down across from him.

"Yes, Mr. Gardener? What would you like?"

Mr. Gardener sighed, looking Logan in the eyes. "Alright, look, Croft. You are aware that the branch is being downsized, yes?"

Logan gulped. "Yes, I am aware."

What could he possibly mean by this? Logan has been working at this company for years- more than a decade. He's climbed the ranks, and is on his way to becoming a branch manager himself. He's his boss's number two, he has the most clients, he's.. important. At least in paper company standards.
His boss probably just wants help with deciding who to let go, right?

"Alright. Yes. I'm not gonna beat around the bush here, Croft. I'm afraid we're gonna have to let you go. Today."

Logan's eyes widened, and he blinked. Let go? Him? Now?

"I'm.. sorry, what?"

"You're fired, Croft."

Logan coughed and adjusted his tie. "I really don't want to argue with here, sir, but do you really think this is the best decision? I.. this company needs me! Who's going to take all my clients? I have a future at this company, and I'm sure you realize that."

Mr. Gardener stood up. "I believe you have a future somewhere else. This decision is final, pack up your desk. You need to be outta here before 12."

Logan quickly checked his watch. It's 11 AM. He has an hour.

Logan opened his mouth to speak, but realized there was nothing he could do and quickly closed it. He stood up silently and walked out of his boss's office.

He packed up his stuff silently, answering any questions his co-workers were giving him with the least amount of words possible. Too many words and he might break.

He caught a bus at 12:30, and arrived back home just before 1.

He walked up to his apartment, went inside, locked the door, and slid down it until he sat on the floor.

Logan was silent as he took in what just happened. He has no job. With no job, he can't make money. He needs to pay his rent this week. He was scheduled to get a pay raise in two days, he was going to use that to pay rent. Without money, he has no home.

"Oh my god.." Logan whispered silently to himself, placing a hand on his forehead. "What am I supposed to do now?"

Logan thought for a bit. He's never really needed help for something like this. If he ever had a problem, he could solve it on his own.
Except, of course, when he was younger. He'd go to his mother.

Wait.. that's it.

"Thank you again, mom."

Only a week later, Logan's life is completely changed.

His mom helped him buy an apartment, and is helping him out with money until he can get a job back in Florida.

Yes, that's right, he's not in Florida anymore. He took a plane back to his childhood home- all the way across the country in Montana.

"You're welcome, hun." She patted him on the back. "Lousy Christmas gift, yeah? Oh, but you'll love it here. This little town hasn't changed a bit since you left. Same people, same buildings, same everything. Everything's just a little older, right?"

Logan chuckled. "Yeah. Thank you again. Uhh.. where did you say my new apartment was?"

Logan's mom smiled at him. "Just across the street, at the end, on the left. Your new mailbox is in there, I think it's 3C, and it will have your keys in there. Your furniture is already up there, and I think most of it is unpacked. All that's left to bring up is your little carry-on bag, but that roller bag is right next to you. Love you, see you soon!"

Logan gave his mother a kiss on the cheek. "Love you too, mom."

And he was on his way.

Across the street, to the apartment. Mailbox 3C, get the key, go find the room.

Logan guessed it would be on floor three, so he walked up the staircase to floor three. He got there, walked down the hall, and saw his room.

He put his new key in the key hole, and unlocked it. But before he could open the door, he heard a noise.

A door opening, next to him. A neighbor?

He turned his head to see who it was. He layer his eyes upon... someone.

Someone he thought he would never see again. They made eye contact, both of them recognizing the other person immediately and realizing that they were next-door neighbors now.

"...Patton?" Logan mouthed, hardly noticeable, not even making a sound.

Logan stared for a couple more seconds, before blinking, opening the door, and walking in without another word.
