"Oh my god." Logan whispered underneath his breath as he locked his door behind him. "My next-door neighbor is Patton."

Since Logan grew up in this town, he and Patton used to hang out. A lot. In fact, they were best friends up until middle school when everything changed.

Logan never really liked change. But it seemed necessary at the time. Either he stayed best friends with a kid that wasn't as smart as him, wasn't in the gifted program.. or he could start hanging out with the kids that are as smart as him, that are in the gifted program.

Logan, chose the second one. But he regretted that choice as soon as he had to cancel his first plan with Patton- that look on his face almost made him cry. Patton was his best friend, how could he have just abandoned him like that?

And now, Logan has to live with the fact that maybe Patton was smarter than him in middle school. Patton wouldn't have made that choice, but Logan did.

Logan sat down on his new couch, leaning back. What is he going to do? He can apologize. Of course, just apologize, and hope that Patton will forgive him just like that!

..He wouldn't.

So Logan decided that his only choice was to avoid Patton.

Which, is the same thing Patton decided to do.

"So, has anything really happened since I left?" Logan asked his mom.

"Not really. As I said, everything's here, just a bit older." She smiled. "The only thing that really happened was a new bakery opening. They replenished that abandoned produce store into it. It's a very popular bakery, too! Run by a nice man that's probably around your age."

Logan saw the bakery up in the distance, reading the name on the sign at the top of the building: Muffins.

Thy got closer, and were about to walk in, when Logan looked inside.

Behind the counter was none other than Patton.

Time seemed to stop as they made eye-contact briefly, before Logan quickly thought of an excuse to leave and checked his watch.

"Oh, sorry mom, I gotta go. Still have a lot of unpacking to do, and I want to be finished by tonight."

"Oh, okay, sweetie! I'll see you later!"

Logan kissed his mom's cheek quickly. "Bye, mom!"

He quickly walked back to his apartment. Phew. That was a close call.

Logan remembered his mom telling him that mail came on Sunday's. Today was Sunday- Sunday morning. Logan decided he should go downstairs to see if he had anything.

He walked down the stairs, went out into the lobby, and...

"Oh no. Patton." Logan mouthed silently.

Patton's back was turned, collecting some letters from his mailbox- 3D. Patton hadn't seen Logan yet. Logan probably doesn't even have any mail, he just moved in about a week ago, so he should just.. leave.

Logan started walking forward.

What are you doing? He thought to himself. Just leave! This is only going to make things more awkward!

Logan reached Patton, the latter still unaware of Logan's presence.

Logan opened his mouth to speak, shut it, and opened it again. "..Patton?"

Logan's face flushed from embarrassment as soon as the word slipped from his lips. Patton turned around quickly, surprised. "I- oh.. Logan!"

They both stood in awkward silence for a few moments, unsure of what to say. Logan sighed.

"Look, I'm.. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."

Patton cocked his head to the side slightly. "..For what?"

"For abandoning you, all those years ago. The kids I started hanging out with told me I needed to hang out with them more, not you. They kind of.. peer pressured, I guess, me into abandoning you. And I feel really bad about it. I thought I was doing the smart thing, hanging out with smarter kids, b-but I realized that you were probably smarter than me the whole time because you would have never done that. And when I realized you're my next-door neighbor now, I just felt so bad, and I avoided you, but I realized that I needed to say something, so, uh, now.. we're here."

Patton stared at him for a couple seconds, before letting out a tiny giggle. "Logan.. it's okay. That was middle school. I forgive you. I made new friends pretty quickly, named Roman and Virgil- I'm still friends with them today. I'm sorry you felt to bad about it for so long, really, I-"

Logan cut him off. "No, no, please don't be sorry, this was entirely my fault. I should have known better. And-"

"Logan?"

Logan blinked. "Yes..?"

"Let's go to dinner sometime. Tonight? We should really catch up. It's been so long."

Logan let a small smile slip onto his lips. "That sounds pleasant. I don't really know the town that much anymore, uh.. just knock on my door at 7, perhaps?"

Patton giggled again. "Yeah, that works. See you then, Logan!"

Patton waved at Logan, and Logan waved back as he turned to walk back upstairs. "See you soon, Patton."
