Stay Away

Right after Iain told me that he wants to be my friend, the air went awfully awkward. I was silent and I just focused on my coffee. Iain was smiling the whole time. Hindi ko maintindihan kung para saan ba ang mga ngiti niya.

When I couldn't take the awkwardness anymore, I stood up and excused myself. Naiwan si Iain doon habang ako naman ay dumiretso na sa elevator. I would've took the stairs for exercise pero hindi pa tapos ang renovation sa railings and landings. Only the elevator is functional.

"Stay away from him, Sons," sabi ni Pablo.

I immediately called him and I'm glad he picked up. Pablo is just never too busy when it comes to me.

"Bakit?"

"I know Iain. Alam ko mga galawan niya."

My brows furrowed. "You always say that..."

Every guy that's ever been involved with me - manliligaw man o nakikipag kaibigan lang, Pablo always says the same thing. Parang rehearsed line na niya 'yon.

Stay away from him. I know his type. Alam ko mga galawan niyan. Hindi maganda ang intensyon niyan sa'yo.

I slowly nodded. "Okay," I replied.

He knows what's best for me. Sounds like a mother but yeah... Pablo is like my mom sometimes.

"Good."

Naniniwala naman ako sa kanya. Plus, it's not like I need more friends. Kuntento na ako sa kaunting kaibigan na meron ako.

"Pero ano ba mga galawan niya?" tanong ko. Agad na kumunot ang noo ni Pablo. "Just asking," pahabol ko.

"All games, Sonia. I bet you it's not just friendship that he's after. Baka pa tipo ka no'n."

"Hindi naman siguro."

"Well, who knows? Just stay away from him," sabi pa niya. He looks problematic as he brushes his hair with his hand.

"May problema ka ba?" I asked. Mukha kasing ang lalim ng iniisip niya.

Umiling siya. "Just a bad game."

"You sure? Sorry pala hindi ako nakapanood..."

"Yup. It's fine but watch our game this Saturday."

Saturday... I have things to do but I could clear out some to make time.

"Saan ang venue?"

"Our school. By the way it's versus your school," he laughed.

I'm not really updated with Pablo's games. Hindi ko rin kasi maintindihan ang basketball. I'm more of a football and baseball fan. Basketball, not that much. Pero alam ko na magaling si Pablo. He's been a part of different leagues held in China and Thailand. Plus he's been an MVP in a big league in Cebu.

Our video call was cut abruptly when my phone died. Hindi ko na pala iyon na-charge.

"Sonia," tawag ni Ate Minerva kasabay ng katok sa pintuan ng kwarto ko.

"Po?" sagot ko bago bumangon.

"May tao sa labas. Kakilala mo raw? Pinatuloy ko na kasi kanina pa pala naghihintay sa labas."

Huh? Sino naman? Bukod sa mga kaibigan at iilang kaklase ko, wala nang bumibisita sa'kin dito. Ate Minerva would have recognized the person. Pero parang hindi niya kilala.

Lumabas ako ng kwarto at bumaba para maka diretso sa living room.

There, sitting on the couch is Iain Uvero. May hawak siyang pamilyar na wallet. I immediately recognized that it's mine. Naiwan ko!
