Pants

There were curses everywhere.

Matapos ang huling exam at nang makaalis na ang proctor, nagkagulo ang buong klase. There were some who are so frustrated. Ang iba naman ay masaya dahil sa wakas, tapos na ang midterm exams. Leera and Jean both looked like they're about to riot.

"What the hell was that? Wala akong siguradong sagot!" si Jean na kunot na ang noo.

"Nakasagot ka ba, Sons? Ang gago talaga ng Thermo. Hindi na ako magugulat kapag bagsak ako do'n," sabi naman ni Leera. I can almost taste the disappointment in her tone.

I was about to answer when Jean interrupted me.

"For sure nakasagot yan. Sonia made Thermodynamics her best friend."

"Every course is her best friend," sabi ni Lee.

"Right," sang ayon ni Jean.

"I answered the problem solving part. Sa objectives lang ako hindi masyadong sigurado..."

The last exam wrung my brain. I was right na magbibigay ng advanced problem ang ilang prof. Buti na lang naaral ko 'yong sa thermo. Two questions din 'yon worth fifteen points each. If I get it right, it might fill in to the quiz I missed last time.

Nagkagulo pa lalo sa classroom nang magsimulang mag-discuss si Jash at ang ibang blockmates ko tungkol sa exam. They crowded over the board. May isang nagbibigay ng problem habang si Jash naman ay nagsusulat na sa board.

It actually became a system in our block. Kapag tapos ng midterms or finals, nagdi-discuss iyong mga nakasagot ng problems para malaman ng iba kung saan sila nagkamali. The professors don't give answer keys. That's why it's really important to have Jash in this class. Siya lagi ang nagdi-discuss. I do it sometimes, too. Pero laging nagre-reklamo ang iba na hindi raw nila maintindihan kapag ako ang nagtuturo.

"Dapat talaga sumabay ako sa'yo mag-aral. Iyong hindi ko pa talaga gets na topic ang lumabas sa problems. Kainis!"

"I sent you my reviewer and solutions... Sorry, hindi mo ba naintindihan 'yong sulat ko?"

"I can read it. I can't understand it."

"Yeah, same," sabi ni Lee at tumayo para makinig na rin sa discussion sa unahan.

I know our degree program is really hard. I also know that Jean and Leera hate it when I try to console them and say that it's just one exam... Na marami pang susunod at may chance pang bumawi. But they would tell me to shut it. Kasi raw pare-pareho naman kami naghihirap at nagpupuyat para makapag-aral. I shouldn't tell them that it's fine when it's clearly not.

Naiintidihan ko naman 'yon. But sometimes I can't help it so I just hug them and not speak at all.

I was about to hug Jean when she stood up and threw her arms around me. Nabigla ako nang marinig kong umiiyak siya. She's frustrated and sad. Niyakap ko rin siya pabalik. She's not saying anything. Umiiyak lang.

Ganito rin siya last sem noong akala niya babagsak siya sa isang major. She didn't... So I'm sure she'll get through it. Matalino kaming lahat dito. We can all do this.

"I think I'll fail..." she said after a few minutes.

"No, you won't."

"No, seriously. Babagsak yata talaga ako."

"Hindi nga sabi. If you say it one more time, I'll hit you," pagbabanta ko.

Jean laughed and broke the hug. Ang pula na ng ilong at mata niya.
