The whole event's place was fancy. You'd know immediately that a rich and well known family hosted it. Well, the Uveros are rich so it isn't a surprise.

Nang makarating kami ay agaran ang pakikihalubilo ng mga magulang ko. Cody's not here but I made sure that I played with him even for just an hour before we left. Magtatampo kasi iyon kung hindi ko pagbibigyan.

I studied the whole night and slept the whole morning. It wasn't my original plan but at least I got to review. Napagalitan pa ako ni Mom noong lunch kasi grabe raw 'yong itim sa ilalim ng mga mata ko. Well, it's been normal for me ever since I entered Chanston University. Mom was just so particular about it because she always wants me to look good. I'm not vain so I don't pay attention to it that much.

"Sonia came home! Mabuti naman, hija. Living away from your family is hard," si Mr. Guytingco, isang business partner.

"Ah, opo. Dad asked me to be here," I replied politely.

Marami pa ang nakipag kamayan at nakipag-usap bago kami tuluyang nakalapit sa mesang para sa amin. The party's almost starting kaya naupo na kami.

I got a non-alcohol beverage. My parents are busy watching whatever's in front. Iginala ko ang paningin ko para maghanap ng kakilala. Aside from the usual faces I see in social gatherings like this, wala na akong ibang nakitang pamilyar. Iba naman yata 'yong dinaluhan ni Celes.

Pablo is nowhere to be found. That guy. Mukhang nag-enjoy yata sa lakad niya.

My attention was called when people started to stand up and clap their hands. Inalalayan din ako ni Dad para makatayo kaya sumunod ako.

At the stage, I saw a fine looking man and his gorgeous wife, I think, beside him. Must be the Uveros. I'm not really familiar with their faces since iba naman ang field ng business nila. They're more on construction and steel. Palaisipan din sa akin bakit sila nag-venture sa sugar business. Not that it's a bad thing, though.

Lumipat ang tingin ko sa mga pigurang nakatayo sa tabi ng mag-asawa. There are three men. Hindi nagkakalayo ang tangkad sa isa't-isa. My eyes stopped on one particular person.

I almost choked with my drink when I realized who it was.

What the fuck?

I thought it was the other family of Uveros. Iyong pamilya ni Austin Javier! Not Iain's! I thought about this when Mom told me last night but I didn't hope for it!

Iain Uvero may not know me but I know him. For the past two years, he beat me consecutively in the Engineering Tri-Sci-Math Tournament. Once I got third place and last year I got second place. But Iain? He's always the champion! Hindi ako sanay matalo. I grew up to be very confident with myself, my intelligence especially. What's more annoying is that he's very humble about it. Mas gugustuhin ko pa kung mayabang siya para may rason ako na mainis sa kanya. That tournament is a big thing. Mataas at marami ang ibinibigay na incentives kapag nananalo.

At this point, I just harbored envy towards him. It's not healthy, I admit. Hindi maganda na mainggit sa iba lalo na kung alam mo naman na may magagawa ka para makuha rin iyon.

I just sat in silence the whole time. Matapos ipakilala ang pamilya ay nagsimula na silang bumisita at makihalubilo sa bawat mesa.

"Welcome to the business!" bati ni Dad sa mag-asawang Uvero nang makalapit ang mga ito sa amin. Si Iain kasama ang dalawa pang lalaki ay nakasunod lang din sa kanila.

They talked about things. About the construction of their factory in Davao mostly.

"I heard your daughter is studying at Chanston, too? Rafael recently graduated there," si Mr. Uvero sabay lahad sa mukhang panganay na anak. "Inigo and Iain are still studying."
