I leave my car and walk towards my apartment complex. It's overcast today and there's a chill in the air. It definitely made getting up for work even more difficult than usual. Ever since Peyton left, things at work just haven't been the same. I feel drained and have little to no motivation to even go up there. It sucks, but I have to have the money. I don't have a crutch like most of the people I see while I'm there.
"Hey beautiful." I hear a voice say.
My head swiftly turns to the left. "Jett? What are you doing here?"
Jett takes the last few steps needed to reach me. "I came to see you, of course."
"I didn't know you were coming over. You scared me." I respond.
Jett wraps his arms around me for an embrace. "I didn't tell you, because I didn't want to risk you telling me "no"."
The side of my mouth turns up into a smile. "Well, you're too smart for your own good."
We both break into laughter as we continue walking to my apartment door. As we enter my apartment I head straight for my bedroom. I'm ready to get out of these work clothes and into something comfortable. Jett lowers himself down onto the couch. A few minutes later I join him on the couch, snuggling into his arm.
"I like you like this." He says softly.
"Like what?" I ask.
Jett throws his hand into the air and lets it fall, as if he's showcasing my entire body. "You can't be serious."
I sit next to him wearing black sweat pants, an oversized long sleeve shirt, and my hair is thrown up into a messy bun. There is nothing that is even remotely attractive about me right now. He must crazy.
"I am." He says.
I let out a small laugh. "Well, I guess it's a good thing, then. I'm not the kind of girl that gets super dressed up that often."
Jett smiles. "That makes me love you even more."
I rest my head back into Jett's arm just as his phone starts to ring. I can feel his body shift next to me. I assume he's checking to see who it is.
"Hey there." I hear him say.
I sit upright and scoot over a little to give him some space. I don't want him to feel like I'm trying to get into his conversation.
"Yeah, I'm over at Evy's place right now." He says.
At the sound of my name I look over to him. I watch as he mouths something to me. "It's my mom."
I nod my head in understanding and push myself into the couch as much as possible. I wish I had a fireplace in here.
"Why? Um, okay. Hold on." He says and hands his cell phone to me.
"What?" I ask.
"My mother wants to speak to you." Jett speaks up.
I feel a little uneasy at the sound of his words. I've spoken to his mother before in small increments. When he's on the phone with her, I'll say hello in the background or something like that. However, we've never had a full conversation before and she most definitely has never asked to speak to me alone.
I take the cell phone in my hands and decide to just go for it. "Hi, Mrs. Mary."
"Evy, hello dear. How are you?" she says.
"I'm good, thank you." I speak up. "How are you?"
"I'm doing well, thank you." She replies. "I wasn't sure if Jett was actually going to give you the phone or not. I'm sure he's sitting close by, isn't he?"
