Back in my apartment, I tossed my bag on the bed not bothering to unpack. I wondered if I should call Colson, or wait till I was in a better mood. But he decided for both of us, by calling. I raised the phone ready to accept FaceTime.
"Hey, beautiful," he called cheerfully into the phone.
He was backstage at what I would guess was a show, surrounded by people. His eyes glazed, he had that goofy smile on his face that came when he was feeling really good. Despite my earlier worried feelings, I was happy to see him.
"Hi, baby," I replied.
"I miss you!" he yelled, leaning his head back as he did.
I giggled, I loved that he could be silly with me. It was such a contrast from the man who stood on stages and rapped about the difficulties in his life.
"I miss you too, Luna!" Pete called from behind his shoulder.
I rolled my eyes, but he too was charismatic.
"Aye, I miss you as well Luna!" Dominic ran in front of the screen. He wore more black eyeliner around his eyes than black lipstick on his lips, his hair flying across in clumps.
I laughed at the sight of them. Someone yelled something I couldn't make out, and they turned laughing. A blunt was passed between them, as they each took a drag. I was starting to feel like an outsider as their attention stayed on the party behind them.
"I think I'm gonna go." I couldn't hide my annoyance now. I didn't like him calling just to ignore me. The negative feeling grew when he didn't respond.
"Colson... Colson!" I called, and he finally turned.
"Oh crap, sorry Luna" he held his cheek.
"I gotta go." I lied. My chest tightened as my mind spun, working me up into an internal frenzy.
"Okay baby. I love you!" he called, unaware.
"Yeah, love you too" I hung up quickly.
Throwing my phone across the couch and folding my arms. Pointing alone in the silence of my apartment.
I tossed in my sleep that night. Not able to find rest with the distance between Colson and me.
The next morning I needed extra concealer to hide the circles that formed from my lack of sleep. I called Lorelei, turning on the speakerphone so I could speak safely while I drove.
"I think I'm gonna go see him," I bit my nail nervously.
"What changed from this weekend?" she asked.
"I don't know," I began, "He called last night but basically ignored me. There's just a constant party around him. I just want to make sure he's okay." I answered.
"I don't know, Luna. You have to remember this is his job. You can't just show up and expect to be tended to."
"I do not need tending to. I just want to see my boyfriend; nothing crazy about that." I defended myself.
"Mhm." I could hear her eyes roll through the speaker.
"You sound like you want to babysit him" she went on.
She may have a point there. I considered. But I couldn't stand the thought of him being in another country where it would be even harder for us to communicate. Just a little trip to see my boyfriend. It was sweet of me, really. And I held on to that reasoning as I booked a last-minute, overpriced ticket.
The ticket purchased, I was determined to spend the rest of the week focused on me. Lorelei and I exchanged links to different properties, talking about what we deemed most important and what our deal breakers would be.
