The night I received the letter, I broke down emotionally, and I knew what I needed to pick myself back up.

Lorelei greeted me at the door, eyes wide, "Luna!" The state of my face must have alerted her to why I had shown up to her apartment without calling or texting. I closed my eyes, and leaned against her shoulder as she embraced me.

"Are you okay?" she whispered, her eyes began to study mine as she released me.

I shook my head, and walked passed her to the kitchen. In the fridge was what I had hoped to find: a bottle of rosé. I uncorked it, poured a large glass and drank deeply.

"Ah, it's one of those days" she said, closing her door and joining me into the kitchen. She reached for a glass of her own and held it out as I filled it and then refilled my own.

Reaching into my back pocket, I pulled out the letter and handed it to her without speaking. Instead, I drank another long sip.

"What's this?" she asked, removing it from the envelope, unfolding it carefully and read it.

"Wow." she said as she finished.

"Yup," I replied, pouring more hoping-for-a-solution rosé.

"What are you gonna do about this?" she asked.

I shrugged, "Nothing?"

She looked down at the letter and back to me, "Nothing?"

I groaned, letting my head fall back. "What am I supposed to do?" I asked.

"Man, I don't know," she answered. The second time my situation had stunned her.

"He sounds like he's doing better," Lorelei offered, "like cleaning up his act better."

"And that's great!" I agreed, "That's all I ever wanted for him."

"But-" she started, I met her eyes. "But you always wanted it to happen with you."

"Yes." I agreed again, "But that was before Jaxson."

Lorelei scoffed.

"I know, I know you don't think he's not the one for me. But he's safe and uncomplicated, and..."

I sighed heavily, "But he's not Colson."

"Bingo" she said pointing at me.

"Shut up." I scolded.

I took an Uber home from Lorelei's, promising to pick up my car later. I had a slight buzz and a lot to think about but no time. I had a date with Jaxson that I had to get ready for. He was taking me out dinner to celebrate Valentine's Day early. We had decided on a local sushi place we both loved.

It's not boring. I told Lorelei in my subconscious, Just traditional.

Even the Lorelei in my head rolled her eyes.

Jaxon picked me up right on time. Dependable, punctual. I was determined to focus on his good qualities. I knew there were valid reasons I chose to be with him.

At the restaurant, he ordered my favorite rolls and sashimi. Thoughtful. Great memory.

"Luna?" He broke into my thoughts. "You seem distracted, are you alright?"

"Yes!" I said a bit too loudly. Lowering my voice, I said again, "Yes, just thinking about a client." I smiled through my lie and he returned it.

"A toast," he said, raising his glass. I hadn't even noticed he had ordered champagne, "to us. Rekindling our romance and becoming stronger than ever."
