Meet the Candidates

Sandara's POV

The smell of the surrounding is very refreshing. I am now in the garden of our town's convent. Three hours ago I was in Seoul but I was escorted by some men of our province's governor all the way from Seoul to Busan. I was beginning to get nervous on the important matter we will be talking with the governor any moment from now.

"Dara?" Sister Karen called me and asked me to follow her.

"Sister Karen?" I called her attention as we are pacing to the convents mini conference hall. "Why does the governor wanted to talk to me?"

She smiled to me and continued walking. "You are not alone, Dara. You are going to have some words with the governor together with Hyun-A, Sulli, Sohee and Jessica."

"Them too?" I asked incredulously. They were my fellow orphans here few years ago before we go on our separate ways to somehow choose our own choice of university in Seoul. They too are the scholarship grantees of the governor after receiving mine. But now we are gathered here, what's up with this set up?

When we reached the hall, the four girls sitting promptly in front of those 3 intimidating figures caught my eyes. I slightly bowed to the three and throw a smile to the four girls. I find my own sit beside Sulli. There's the governor sitting just in front of us together with an elderly person and a young looking man.

"Good morning girls." Governor Hyun Suk greeted us. We all responded politely. "This is Elder Tahil of Japan and Sir Key.

We bowed to them as I secretly scanned all the features of Elder Tahil and Key. The first one has this particular inaudible aura in him while the latter is just a plain person for me. What do we got here is not an ordinary folk to me and I could sense the fishy business that will about to be presented to us.

"I hate beating around the bush girls..." the governor continued. "The elder is here to pick her grandson's future wife. And luckily, the five of you are the candidates."

The five of us stiffened on the revelation and exchange shocked glances with each other. We are still running 21 and here came the news that one of us will possibly be chosen as the wife of a total stranger!

I am to start opening my mouth to somehow clarify things and confirm that I actually misheard it but this particular Key interjected in.

"The elder was the one sponsoring your studies. Your school obligations, books, lodging, weekly allowances, all of those. He supported this orphanage long before you came here and as you can see, this whole charity thing is still operating." He said.

I stared at the elder for too long. I never thought that it's just an elderly man that was constantly supporting us and our orphanage.

"I am saying that as a payment for all of those debts you owe from him, I say you have to agree to be a candidate for his grandson's future wife." He said as if ordering us for something impossible to do. He was clearly making a point that we don't have the right to refuse at all. Like our very life depended on them.

We are all awed. I throw a glance to mother superior who seems to have this odd furrowed on her forehead; she seemed to know about this matter but was rather displeased with the idea of us marrying a stranger. One of us will be unfortunately chosen to face that bitter fate.

The next thing I knew, the Elder spoke to us at last saying that one of us will be traveling with them to Japan to meet his grandson. And the flight will be two days from now.

Author's POV

Dara was in her own room in that convent, lying flat while staring at the ceiling for too long. She could not still absorb the whole situation they are in. it's a shocked to them to have this bit of information behind those grants that were being offered on their scholarship program. It has its own benefit and the grantor wanted to claim that benefit from the grantees.
