It's been a couple of weeks since I've hung out with Nny. We would still talk over the phone and all but we haven't seen each other in person.
Today, I was at the bookstore, restocking the shelves with the latest vegan bullshit. I mean, honestly, how can anyone like a book like that?
Once more, I was taking care of Devi's shift, covering for her and saying that she was here since the manager was out. I have been telling her that if she didn't come back soon, she'll get fired. Rent is already crushing her so I don't know how she'll survive without a job.
As I reached for the top shelf, I saw someone in the corner of my eye, making me quickly turn my head to face them. Johnny was standing next to me, hands behind his back as he watched me work,
"Nny? What are you doing here?"
He looked away from the top shelf and stared at me,
"I wanted to see you."
I smiled at him, getting off my toes and beginning to walk away. Nny followed behind me,
"For what? I have to work."
I said with a smile, teasing him.
"Well, we both know we haven't seen each other in a while."
"I'm surprised you haven't climbed in my window."
He shrugged, the sound his boots made resonating off the wood floors,
"I needed a little bit of time to think of what you said."
I stopped and he ran into my back. I turned around and stared at him for a bit,
"Are you going to break up with me?"
He widened his eyes, furrowing his eyebrows and putting his hands out,
"No! That's not what I meant-"
I laughed, punching his arm lightly,
"I'm just yanking your chain."
He sighed in relief and I chuckled quietly.
"Anyway, I really appreciate you saying that to me."
I smiled, fiddling with my Identification badge,
"you're the only person I don't want to kill."
There it was.
"I appreciate you saying that to me, Nny. It gives me some sort of reassurance."
I smiled at him, wrapping my arms around his shoulders,
"I have to get to work, I'll see you in a bit."
For once, he gave me a genuine smile before kissing my temple and walking out of the store. I let out a sigh before going to put some more books away.
After work, walking home
I pulled out my phone, checking the time before quickly putting it back in my pocket. It was getting chilly by now since fall was coming and of course, I forgot to bring a coat.
I rubbed my arms to create a sense of warmth as I waited for the sign to show the little person walking. Once it turned, I began walking once more. I took in my surroundings, staring at the trees in particular and wondered when the fall season would take the lush green leaves from the tree.
I stopped paying attention to the trees when I felt someone staring at the back of my head. I didn't turn around, thinking it was only Nny checking up on me. I felt a hand on my shoulder so I quickly turned around and stared at Devi. It was now unusual to see her out of her home and in the streets. She was wearing a black coat and sunglasses with her hair in pigtails.
