Chipped nail polish

I slung my bag over my shoulder, walking out of my house. I was walking to work, not expecting Devi to be there. She's been missing a lot of work lately so I've been pushing her to go to work. I even bargained with her that I would pick her up and wouldn't leave her during work.

It didn't work anyway.

I haven't spoken with Johnny since yesterday and I wasn't planning to. I just needed a small break from him, I needed time for myself. Of course, I don't know how Johnny would take it so I wasn't planning on telling him.

I was biting my nails on the way to work, becoming anxious about seeing Nny pop out of a corner. I did love him, I truly did, but I just wanted to process all of this.

I felt like I was being watched once more, thinking it was Nny. I turned around but saw nothing. It didn't seem like it was Johnny, it was weird. I ignored it and continued to walk to work.

I arrived at the bookstore door, to my surprise, Devi at the counter. I quickly rushed inside rushing to the counter. She wasn't serving anyone at the moment so I wrapped my arms around her waist in a hug. She was about to hit me until she realized it was me.

"Y/N? What are you doing?"

I pulled away and set my bag down with a smile.

"Nothing, I just didn't expect you to be here today!"

She leaned against the counter, smiling slightly,

"I still need to pay rent, you know."

I chuckled lightly, staring at my nails. I began to tap my fingers on the counter,

"Hey, but you said that you wouldn't leave me."

I smiled before punching her shoulder gently.

"I'll stay in your eye line."

I winked at her with a smile. She rolled her eyes and pushed me slightly. I laughed as I saw her turn around, her smile fading.

"What?"

I said to her as she continued to stare at the window. I turned around and saw nothing at the window.

"There's nothing there, Dev. What are you staring at?"

She turned back, biting her nails,

"I thought I saw the guy I went out with."

I turned back to face her, putting my hand on her shoulder,

"I'll take over the counter, go restock the bookshelves."

I said quietly, trying to get her away from the window,

"..Sure.."

She looked over her shoulder for a second before she turned back and walked away from the counter. I began to tap on the counter with my nails, staring at how the black nail polish was beginning to chip at the top of my nails. Ever since I've realized Nny kills people, I've been biting my nails.

It's not that I'm scared of Nny, I'm just slightly panicked. I heard the door open so I turned my head. I saw no one come in through the door so I got a little confused. A couple of seconds passed by before a small hand landed on the counter.

I leaned over and looked down to see Todd looking up at me. I smiled, resting on my arms,

"Hey Todd, here by yourself today?"

He nodded, looking around the store.

"What book have you come for today?"

"I have to have a book for school. I think it was about Christopher Columbus."
