It's been 2 months since the incident of the broken window and such. I had to buy a new phone because I couldn't find my old one. It was weird because I had it on the kitchen FUCKING counter.
But with those thoughts aside, I walked inside the book store. I walked on my own to work all this week.
Devi showed up a couple of days ago but hasn't returned and hasn't returned any of my phone calls.
She said that she would try to come today but it wasn't guaranteed. I held the strap of my bag, taking a deep breath in before setting it down on the ground behind the counter.
I walked over to the new book section, the graphic novels. We just got a huge load of books donated to us, in good condition!
Devi was supposed to restock them but since she wasn't here, I had to do it all by myself.
Business was especially slow today since no one came in on a Wednesday morning-work, school, etc.
I tapped my fingers against the spines of the books and searched around for a book that interested me. I pulled a pretty thick one out and stared at the cover. I smiled slightly before putting it back.
I walked to the cookbook section and stubbed my toes on the corner of the shelf. I yelped slightly and held my foot in pain.
"If I had a woodchipper right now..."
I grumbled under my breath as I walked away from the section. I walked back to the counter, trying to feel my phone in my back pocket. I've become more protective over my phone now that I lost one.
I tapped my fingers against the counter, hearing each one of my nails hitting the marble counter.
A group of teenagers came in, chatting about. I smiled at them as they passed me and they smiled back. I heard the door open again but I was more worried about the kids. They were getting pretty loud and their voices bounced off the walls of the book store.
The picked out their books, a comic book, a graphic novel, a manga, and a mythology book. I was pretty sure they were skipping school but I didn't care about that too much. I rang up their books and they left.
I saw a guy scanning the sections of the books, not seeming like he would pick something any time soon. I pulled out to check if Devi had responded to my texts as I felt eyes on me.
I looked up and the guy was already gone to another section. I didn't think too much of it since everyone just wants peace while buying books. But... I just got an odd vibe from him.
I felt my phone vibrate and I quickly turned the phone back on. I stared at the text message of Devi and it was just a simple 'I'm not coming to work today'
She just responded to the one text this morning, not the other 36 previous messages. I shut my phone off and stuffed it in my back pocket again.
I looked up and the guy was no longer there. I furrowed my brows, getting a bit spooked out. He was still here, I knew that because the door didn't open or close.
More people came in the store towards the end of my shift since everyone was getting out of school and work.
After the last person left the shop, I went over to the sign to turn it over, the sign telling everyone that we were closed.
I went back to the counter and I rested my head on the counter,
"Devi, I need you to work with me..."
I said under my breath as I felt the coldness of the counter on my cheek. I thought I heard footsteps come towards me and I quickly lifted my head off of the counter and looked up in front of me. I saw nothing, staring left and right.
"God, I'm going crazy."
I rubbed my face, slapping myself a couple of times. I grabbed my bag quickly, trying to leave the store as soon as possible. I searched for the store keys in my pocket and I heard the jangle. I pulled it out and locked the store before leaving.
I walked away from the store as I pulled out my phone. I rang up Devi, not really expecting a response.
Her voicemail came up and I hung up in annoyance. I adjusted my bag over my shoulder and stopped on the sidewalk,
'I'm coming over.'
I didn't wait for a response before I began to jog to Devi's house.
