"It's all territorial squabbles and dreary bits of gossip," Cousin Edgar complained, tossing down the paper onto the breakfast table. I rolled my eyes, sipping my coffee as I tried to tune him out. This was a normal complaint nearly made every morning. I didn't know why he insisted on reading the newspaper if he hated it so.
"It's not as if they own the land anyway," Edgar continued as he cut his eggs into smaller bits, "They should just leave well enough alone."
"Just be glad they're fighting amongst themselves," His wife, Mary, chimed in. She always agreed with him, no matter how silly his complaints, "There is nothing worse than a commonwealth united."
Ever since I had died and found myself in Hell, I had lived with my cousin and his wife. They had a beautiful, well-guarded estate on the north side of the pentagram. Most of our neighbors were like us and kept to the more traditional ways, which left us isolated and caught in our own little time capsule.
"Oh, don't forget," Mary said, "Stolas is coming to dinner this evening." I couldn't help but groan. The owl demon overlord was one of the most obnoxious house guests anyone could have at a dinner party. I wondered if I could fake a stomach ache and avoid the evening altogether.
"And," Mary added, looking pointedly at me, "He is bringing an associate with him."
"I sincerely hope it isn't that imp sidepiece of his," Edgar said sourly.
"Absolutely not," Mary sniffed primly, "It's a business contact. A gentleman by the name of Alastor." The name grabbed my attention. Unlike my cousin, I paid closer attention to the newspapers. Alastor's name was one I instantly recognized.
"The Radio Demon?" I asked, speaking for the first time that morning.
"Yes," Mary replied, "I suppose that is what some call him."
Well, if that's who was coming to dinner, maybe tonight wouldn't be such torture after all.
