I sat perched at my makeup mirror, carefully applying my eyeliner. Mary hated the stuff, which made me only more determined to wear it. Our guests were due to arrive at any moment, and I wanted to delay my appearance until their car pulled up. Mary and Edgar were absolutely insufferable while they waited impatiently in the library.
Taking one last look in my mirror at my appearance, I decided I would look as ready as ever. My sequined black gown glittered softly in the lamplight (pictured below). I knew Mary would disapprove, but then again, she disapproved of everything I did or wore. Personally, I thought I looked quite fetching.

The gong announcing the arrival of guests startled me from my thoughts. I glanced out the window towards the driveway, where a polished black town car in the modern style was pulling up.
"(Y/N)!" Mary's sharp voice called out, making me wince, "Stop primping and come down. Our guests were here."
"Coming, Mary!" I replied with a roll of my eyes. I sincerely hoped our new guest would this an evening worth attending.
