After dinner, we all adjourned to the sitting room for coffee. It was a custom part of our dinner parties, and many families similar to ours did the same thing. I made sure to distance myself from Edgar, who kept shooting scathing looks towards me as he continued to talk to Stolas. I tried to ignore him the best I could and talk to Alastor.

"I saw a rather interesting painting in the hall," Alastor said, pretending not to watch me as I tried my best not to look at Edgar, "Would you mind telling me about it?" Then without waiting for my answer, he steered me towards the door.

When we were out in the hall, Alastor looked around to make sure no one was listening before he whispered to me, "Do you want to tell me what's going on or shall I assume the worst?" I gave him a blank look. What on earth could he do? I was legally dependant upon Edgar.

Sighing, Alastor took something out of his pocket. Taking my hand, he pressed a cool, black stone with a carved rune on its smooth surface into my palm. Closing my fingers around it, he said, "A drop of blood on the rune, and this will summon me."

My eyes flicked up from the stone to his permanently smiling face. Offering him a small, quavering smile of my own, I nodded. Closing my fingers tighter onto the stone, I felt the knot in my chest ease a tiny bit.
