Faction[less]

I'm walking around
This institute of education
Observing the varying factions
That sort individuals into groups.
Cliques that determine one's popularity.
That can leave you an outsider
If you choose to be different.

Society encourages individuality
Yet forces you to choose an identity.
Society encourages uniqueness
Yet isolates those very people
Who do not conform to the guidelines
Of said uniqueness.

They tell you that you are free to choose
To be whatever you'd like to be,
To go wherever you'd like to go,
To be with whomever you'd like to be,
To love whomever you'd like to love,
To follow the dreams you've conceived in your head.

But the older you grow,
The more you hear them say
-That's impossible!
-That's unrealistic!
-I disapprove!
-This is nonsense!
And the most popular - Wrong.

We say we embrace individuality
But we group together
In order to isolate,
Subdue,
And erase.

It's all about fitting in.
Being a part of our glorious society.
I sometimes wonder,
Are we ourselves living in a
Dystopian land
From the likes of which
We read so much about?

Are we that society
Which allows
Free will,
Freedom of speech,
Freedom of thought,
And freedom of choice
To be practiced?
And thereafter,
Reprimand one another's actions?

Yes.

Is there really social freedom?
We think we choose freely,
However, in actual fact,
We are being forced to choose
From categories presented to us.

If one chooses outside
Of those categories,
They are different.
They think differently.
That train of thought
Is not welcomed by us.

It's all about fitting in, isn't it?
Being a part of a group with the same people?
We are not the same. Similar, maybe.

Rather than sorting individuals into groups,
Groups should be separated into individuals.

Little does society know
That by excluding,
Disregarding,
And rejecting individuals,
A new faction
Has been created.
