The way back {chapter 16}

It was a cold Sunday afternoon and Kate and Rick was out walking in central park. They hadn't talked since they left each other after their night of passion and today was the day before he would take her to William so he had called this morning and asked her if she wanted to take a coffee with him and just talk. Kate had been at work at the time but after she quit he meet her outside of the precinct and they just started walking not saying much just being there together.

"Kate I had this question on my mind since I first met you and heard about your story..." Rick said and looked at her. Her nose was red because of the cold weather and her cheeks were white as snow. She was beautiful.

"Okey, shoot..." she said with a smile and linked their hands together.

"Why aren't William with his father?" Rick asked and saw the warmth in her eyes disappear.

She looked away and let go of his hand.

"I don't know who his father is.." She said quite but Rick heard it and it took him like a punch in the stomach.

"Oh, look a café, care for some coffee?" Kate said trying to break up the silence.

They walked into the café and ordered a coffee each. Kate moved to one of the tables by the window and sat down while Rick ordered and he insisted that he would pay.

Kate didn't like talking about that night or more that year when she one day was out of know were pregnant and she had no clue of who the father could be. Her father had taken the news kind of bad and he didn't talk to her for almost 5 months but then when he finally met little William he had changed his mind and after that he started being the best grandfather he could be.

Tears rolled down Kate's cheek and she whipped them away quickly not wanting Rick to see them, she would meet her son tomorrow after being a part from each other for almost 5 months now.

"A penny for your thoughts?" Rick suddenly interrupted her thoughts.

Kate looked up at him and saw that he was holding two lattes and a blueberry muffin so she helped him by taking one of the cups and sat it down on the table.

It was still too hot to drink but it was perfect for her freezing fingers.

"So are you nervous about tomorrow?" Rick asked not wanting to upset her by bringing up the father thing again.

"Yeah, kind of.." Kate and gave him a weak smile that only she could give but still look extraordinary.

"Okey, me too actually but I don't know why.." Rick said with a laugh which made Kate relax and laugh with him.

"It's going to be fun to see him but I'm not sure if he will be angry or not.. I betrayed him and left him all alone with no one that he knew..If someone did that to me I would hate them." Kate said and took a sip from the now perfect coffee.

Rick placed his cup down on the table and grabbed both her hands.

"Kate, he will not hate you! He loves you as much as I d..." Rick stopped himself and just continued talking. "Maybe he will not be like he used to be but he will come around."

Kate just stared at him with flushed cheeks.

'He loves me..' was all she could think about. Rick had tried to make big deal about what he almost said but Kate was stuck with 'as much as I d...' in her head.

"Kate?" He asked squeezing her hands and Kate was back in the cafe again.

After finishing their coffee they said their goodbyes and walked separate ways. Rick even gave her a kiss on the cheek and Kate walked back to her car that was part and Rick hurried away to get home to Alexis and Martha.

The next day Kate woke up by a dream that William had been gone when she finally arrived at where he lives. She was full of sweat and had to get into the shower before making breakfast.

When she got out she had a text from Rick waiting.

* Just checking if everything is okey.. *

She smiled when she saw how much he cared about her it was so sweet, she hurried texted him back and said that everything is okay and that she will meet him outside the place where he held his AA meeting in about 1 hour.

Kate got dressed and skipped breakfast, she wasn't in the mood to eat right now. She was too nervous so a coffee on the way was what she had for breakfast. She decided that walking would calm her nerves so that she did.

When she arrived Rick wasn't there so she sat down on the stairs and waited for him. About 5 minutes later a big Jeep drove up and Rick rolled down the window.

"Hey.." Rick said when Kate was closer and she jumped in.

"Hey.." Kate said and smiled.

There was an awkward moment when it was so quiet and no one said a thing. Kate didn't know how to be around Rick, she liked him very much and he had almost said he loved her so how was she suppose to act around him.

"Did you eat?" Rick asked looking down at the coffee cup she held in her hand.

"No, just coffee..I don't think I would keep it down, if you know what I mean." Kate said and laid her head against the window.

Rick didn't answer, he totally understood that she was nervous and he would let he be so that she would regret this.

Rick drove up to the house he had been instructed to and he parked his car. Kate had fallen asleep on the way, it was almost 1,5 hour outside the city and without much sleep the last couple of day he understood that she must be tired.

"Kate we're here.." he said and shaked her so she would wake up.

She opened her eyes and looked around, she was still in Rick's car.

"What?" she said with a sleepy voice.

Rick just smiled, she was so cute when she was tired.

"I said we're here." Rick said.

This time Kate looked outside the car and saw a big house. This is it.

They both got out and Rick waited for Kate and when she came up to him he grabbed her hand.

"You can do this." Rick said and smiled.

Kate was quiet and didn't say much on the walk up to the big doors.

Rick rang the bell and soon there was a lady at the door.

"Oh, hello. Mrs. Castle and Miss. Beckett we're expecting you." the lady said with a welcoming smile and let them both inside.

"Just wait here and I will get William and we can all meet in the livingroom for some coffee." the lady said and disappeared.

Kate looked around the room. Here had her son lived by himself for 5 months with a family he didn't know. She started feeling nauseous, she let go of Rick's hand and backed away from him.

"Kate? Kate.. calm down you can do this I'm here with you." Rick said and grabbed her into a hug.

Another lady came into the room and said that the family was waiting in the livingroom. So they followed the lady and soon they were in a big room with paintings and some furnitures.

The boy walked in and Kate met his eyes.

"MOM!" the boy screamed and let go of the ladies hand and ran right into Kate's arms.

Kate just hugged her boy while the tears streamed down her face. But what she didn't know was that Rick was no longer in the room.

Rick was passing down the hall with his hands on his head.

"It can't be true.. it can't be true.." he said over and over again.

When he saw that little boy with so much joy and love he saw himself. It was him. He looked just like himself when he was a little boy, he knew that he had recently looked through all his albums with Alexis.

It just couldn't be true. How could this have happened.

Could William really be his son?
