Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.
--F. Scott Fitzgerald
Today's the day.
The alpha will be here in about an hour and everyone is hectic. My life could go either way now, either it will get much worse or impossibly better.
I'm obviously hoping for the latter but I will deal with whatever I get. I'm not stupid, I realize that the likelihood of me getting into their pack is slim to none. I won't let myself believe that it all goes right because from my past experiences that's only ever brought me pain.
We were all running around, cleaning the house, making sure it was spotless for the alpha. Henry's been in the kitchen all day, cooking, it smells amazing and my stomach won't stop growling. I hope I eat before the alpha comes because with his alpha hearing there's no chance he won't hear it, which would be so embarrassing.
My stomach growled again but even louder, causing Jamie to speak up. "Ellie, go grab some food before the alpha comes. If I can hear it I can't even imagine how loud it'll be to the alpha." She said, laughing at the blush that formed on my cheeks.
I went into the kitchen and just as Henry was about to kick me out my stomach made another super loud growl that stopped the words just as they were about to leave his mouth. He pulled a leftover burger out of the fridge and handed it to me.
"Thank you so much" I said softly, digging in. I definitely wasn't eating like a 'lady', thank god Jamie couldn't see me.
I gulped it down in 30 seconds, thanking Henry again. He just laughed at me, nodding. While I was recovering my appetite was humongous. It wasn't at all cheap to feed me which was another reason why whichever way this meeting went, I'd find a way to unburden Jamie and Henry.
I was dusting a corner when I heard a car drive up. It was the alpha, I could already feel the power coming off him. My heartbeat was flying out the window as we went to meet him outside, the familiar presence bringing back bad memories.
He gave a small smile and nod to Henry. "Good to see you Henry, Jamie, Jen." They all dipped their heads submissively in return.
The man was huge and had impeccable posture. His gaze was calculating as he looked me over. I couldn't help but cower, slouching and tucking my head slightly. Henry and Jen had tried their best to help me gain more confidence, but there was only so much the could do with the short amount of time we were given.
The hope is that one day I grow into my Alpha genes, but there's no way to be sure whether the damage I've accumulated over the years is permanent or not.
"You must be Ellie." He said authoritatively and I nodded, shaking ever so slightly.
"Y-yes, and you must be the famous Alpha James I've heard so much about." I said softly, cringing at how pathetic my voice came out.
