"Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get."
– Forrest Gump
We headed into the kitchen where Heeler was sitting on a stool with his face in his hands. He lifted it briefly to look at me but looked absolutely exhausted and sick. It looked like he hadn't slept or eaten properly in weeks.
As we walked in further I saw a small, clearly underweight girl sitting curled up in a ball under the counter.
"Ellie. Thank god you're okay" He said weakly and I smiled softly, shrugging against my will. I really don't know where this shrugging thing came from but I've got to stop. People are definitely going to notice and then my otherwise perfect facade will fly right out the window.
I went over to him and gave him a big hug. He smelt pretty horrible but I fought through it, he looked like he needed it.
"Is that your mate?" I asked to which he nodded his head slowly.
"That's Sarah."
"Do you mind if I go say hi?" I said gently.
"Be my guest. I trust you completely, but I should warn you, she hasn't spoken eaten or slept yet."
I just nodded before making my way over. I sat next to her on the ground and she looked up at me. Her eyes looked a little dead, and deep down I felt like I was staring into a mirror. She looked exactly how I did all those years ago, before I had accepted the reality of my life, before I pushed it all down and put up all my facades.
"I'm Ellie." I said my name softly. She seemed to relax a little when I smiled at her, holding onto her knees a little less tightly.
Heeler was watching us carefully but thankfully Jack and Jas had already left. Sarah didn't need anyone else staring at her.
I turned to Heeler. "Go take a shower and get as much sleep as you can. I know its hard but you need it, we'll be fine together and if we're not I'll call you immediately. I promise."
He paused for a moment, clearly debating it before finally nodding and slowly making his way upstairs. I could tell that he had lost a weight too and I made a mental note to change that.
I was a little hungry myself.
I turned back to Sarah.
"Sarah. I'm craving some spaghetti." With that I got up and head towards the stove. I wasn't trying to force her to talk or treating her like she could break at any little thing. I was treating her like I would have liked to be treated, like she was normal.
God, I would've given anything just to be treated like I was normal.
She warily got up and I could see her debating whether or not to run, probably to go to Heeler.
