Sirius pov
I sit up so quickly and whip around. But I smile, "Hi Emma!"
She smiled back at me, "Hello Sirius. Regulus!"
Regulus nods and lays back down.
"I thought you had been sent off again?" I ask patting the spot next to me.
"Nah, Mum said Narcissa was having some issues with Lucius. So she's just keeping me upstairs." she says casually, sitting next to me.
"Issues? Like they're fighting? Oh but let me guess I mustn't get my hopes up!" I say dramatically.
"No, you know they always end up fine. Trust me you aren't the only one hoping. At least you don't have to stay with them. They never talk to me." Emma mumbles.
"You know what? Sometimes that's better! You almost are never here and you're lucky!" I mutter thinking about earlier.
"I didn't mean like that! You know what I meant you asshole!"
"Yeah yeah I know. Have you gotten anything from anyone?" I ask dismissing talking about family.
"From who? Do you mean your friends?" Regulus scoffs.
I turn and look at him forgetting he was there, "Yes from my friends. Emma here is my messenger."
"Is that what I am now?" Laughs Emma.
"Yes," I reply, "You don't have to stay up here Regulus. Mum and Dad are going to come looking for you soon and if they find us you'll get a beating."
Regulus grunts, "I don't give a damn any more on what they do to me. It's you that has to worry. That stunt you pulled earlier won't end well."
"Whatever," I shrug, "I don't care it's not like they'll kill me!"
With that we all go silent, "Okay so maybe they could but would they really?"
"Sirius, we all know that's more then possible." Emma whispers.
I hear fluttering and look up to see an owl flying towards us. I recognize that it's James'. I stand up and the owl lands on my shoulder pecking my gently to take the letter, "Thanks Gary."
The owl hoots and flys into the window to the attic where Emma has a cage set up. I tear open the letter and read it,
Hello Sirius!
I hope all is well. I know you'll be in some trouble because of last year, you know you just walking out. I hope you make some progress on talking to Reg. I also hope you won't come back to school all beat up. If you do I might have to come to your place and how your mum some things. I miss you as does Remus and Peter. Oh and also Elspeth. Remus and Peter are staying over this week. I'll write to you in a week as always! Say hi to Emma for us if you see her.
With lots of love,
JamesPs: Remus says hi
Pps: Peter also says hi!
I smile and look up to see Emma walking back to her window, "I'll go feed Gary quick if you wanna come!"
I shrug and follow her, "Remus, James, and Peter say hi. They're all at James' for this week."
"Really? Already?", Emma asks climbing into the attic.
I hear shuffling behind me and I know Regulus is following us, "Yeah I guess. You've never seen her room have you Regulus?"
"Hm? Oh no I haven't." he mutters from behind.
"Why are you so moody?" Calls Emma quietly from her bed.
"I don't know. Why are you so nosy?" answers Regulus flatly.
I roll my eyes, "She's not."
I climb through the window and I see Emma under her bed lifting the platform to find the owl food. She picks it up and brings it over to Gary. Gary hoots lightly. (Even the owls know to be quiet here.)
"Well then why is she asking about me?"
"Maybe because I've just met you and I'm trying to decide whether or not I can trust you." Emma mumbles to herself.
"Oh I'll answer that for you," snarls Regulus from the roof, "You can't."
"See that's where your wrong. You may act like the tough kid but really deep inside you are a cinnamon roll. My reasoning? You haven't ran off to Mum yet saying that Sirius or I are up here."
Regulus goes silent, "She has a point Reg." I say.
"Yeah I figured that out on my own thanks." he sneers.
I roll my eyes sick of his attitude. But I see where he's coming from, this summer isn't going to fun for any of us. Eventually Regulus stalks back onto the roof to go back to the main part of the house.
"He seems fun!" She mutters.
"He wasn't always like this. You can't exactly blame him, I mean he grew up knowing nothing but this. I just never saw the point." I say.
"I haven't ever. Not even as a young child, thus the memory charms." She flops down on her bed.
"Yeah but clearly they like you better." I snarl.
"What makes you say that?"
"Well you aren't getting attacked everyday by them." I slide into her chair.
"Says who? Maybe I'm just better at hiding it! Plus I'm also older. By 3 minutes!" She says proudly.
"Oh would you quit it with that? It's 3 damn minutes! And do they really hurt you?" The smile slides off her face as I ask.
"No," she picks at her finger nails, "They don't, not physically at least."
"What do you mean 'not physically at least'?" I feel my anger rising in me.
"Sirius stop. It's fine, you need to look out for yourself before me." She stares at me frowning.
I glare at her, "Since when do you tell me what to do?"
"Since the War started last year! Sirius this is real now. People are being hunted down and killed. I hate to say it but we are very high on that list." She cries out.
"We'll be fine Em, I promise you!" I walk over and kiss her forehead, "I'd better go..."
"Stay. Stay the night, please."
I hesitate looking out the window, "Fine but just for the night."
I walk over to her closet and pull out the bucket and kneel down opening the break away floor. I take out the extra blanket and pillow and put everything else back. By the time I turn Emma has a mat layed out for. I lay down and start to fall asleep. Once she thinks I am she whispers, "I'll protect you with my life little brother."
