A/N: Happy Valentine's Day!
Confessing one's emotions was already difficult enough, but to confess and make up a flowery, heartfelt confession of the top of one's head in front of a considerable amount of polite society was too much.
Dinners had been eaten, dances had been danced, but it was time to get down to business. Joe had been seperated from Y/N and given a 'pep' talk by his father and his father's friends. Once taken away, Y/N had spent an unbearable couple of minutes getting 'spruced up' by her mother and some of the Charbonneau ladies' maids.
The jig was up once Y/N's mother gave her a quick hug before walking back out. It started to make more and more sense as she realized why she hadn't left Joe's side the entire night or why her family and his family were sitting together. Y/N's stomach stirred inside her as she approached Joe.
Joe looked very handsome as he stood alone under the black gazebo. He glanced at Y/N and cracked a rare, barely there smile. Joe was a bully and he'd always be a bully, but his harsh stare softened as he saw the genuine, thinly veiled panic in her eyes.
Y/N's mother had since let go of her and prodded her to join Joe. Y/N gracefully made her way over to her friend. She knew what was going on so there was no use in delaying it.
Joe took both her hands firmly and got on one knee. He caressed them briefly before taking a breath. "Y/N L/N, the first time I met you, I thought you were nothing more than an irritating classmate I'd have to tolerate. An insufferable girl who somehow became my closest ally and friend."
This earned him a soft giggle and a blush from Y/N. He smiled at her just a bit more, confident in his speech.
"However, most unexpectedly, I've found myself deeply in love with you. So I must ask, Ms. Y/N L/N...will you marry me?"
Y/N knew the question was coming but it still made her heart swell once he asked. She had a million questions racing in her head but it was obvious she had one answer for him. The questions could wait.
"Yes!"
