Building Blocks

The loud cheers from the room rang all throughout the venue. As of now, the Kim family was celebrating Christmas eve. Knowing the Kim family then the party would surely be a blast considering they were the most outgoing family in the neighborhood.

The Kims had invited relatives near and far, family friends, and anyone they considered fun - and that included the Oh family.

Little Jisoo then was minding her own business, playing with building blocks, and creating a big blob of what she thought to be a humongous castle fit for a princess such as herself. She was happy in her small corner away from the crowd where blasting music and drunk uncles were but that just had to be ruined.

Her mother had peeked to check on her daughter finding her daughter all alone playing by herself, Mrs. Kim deemed it to be because of shyness when really it was because the child wanted to be left alone. Mrs. Kim had been struck with a great plan to have her daughter company.

Jisoo heard the door closing. She sighed and had shooked her head, quietly resuming her tower.

A few minutes more Jisoo had heard nearing steps and gleeful chatters just down the hall. The creaking door now stood ajar as 3 people came inside. Her mother smiled at Jisoo while talking to the tall man that Jisoo distinguished as the man next door.

The tall man repeatedly kept looking behind him and Jisoo swore she saw mustard yellow fabric behind.

"Jisoo, this is Mister Oh, he's our next-door neighbor."

Jisoo hummed in response, she leaned forward to take the red block and placed it on her castle's wall.

"And this is Sehun, as I remember he's just about your age." Her mother added. And as Jisoo saw, a tall boy with a mustard yellow polo and a pair of jean shorts came out. His eyebrows furrowed while looking at Mister Oh in disagreement.

"Father I ---" Sehun had been cut off when the two adults immediately retreated back to the main space leaving the two children to themselves. Jisoo resumed back to her almost finished castle.

Her small hand found its way to the flower-like block that Jisoo knew the perfect place to make it shine but for the nth time, she was disrupted. The breathing a meter behind her became relevant to everything in the area, she forgot she wasn't alone. She craned her head to the general direction of the little boy as she found him sitting on the floor with a piercing gaze and judging look towards her castle.

"Do you have any problem with my castle Sehun-ssi?"

The little lad took this as a sign to come closer to her work before pointing to her main building. "That's a poorly built facility. It could crumble at any moment." He stated as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Jisoo scrunched her nose in distaste, "Well it's not supposed to be the most stable thing in the world 'cause it's made to look pretty." Was her sarcastic remark.

Sehun pulled out the purple block in the middle of the wall while Jisoo was all too focused on glaring at him. The whole wall came crashing down leaving the poor Jisoo in shock after a wall had come down.

"Nothing pretty is gonna last when it's not strong. You gotta have a foundation for that."

"M - My wall!"

Sehun boredly shrug, staring at the multiple blocks that scattered after the fall down.

"I - If it's just going to be an eyesore then what's the point in building it anyway!" She countered back at Sehun who now held his own collected blocks and was building a solid - but ugly (according to Jisoo) - fort.

She turned her back against him, sniffling as she tried to hold her tears. The air seemed too thick and the corner was silent. Well, that was until the small warmth came to pat her shoulder as she solemnly looked back to see Sehun looking down.

"Hey... I'm sorry." Jisoo huffed and turned her back at the latter.

The seconds ticked and the hours tocked, soon had already arrived. The loud cheers were no more, the bustling mumbles stopped, and the cackling relatives left.

When all was said and done Jisoo had finally turned around. Mr. Oh was nowhere to be seen, his son gone. Jisoo sighed, she didn't get the chance to play and it was her fault.

Her feet moved and she was about to change clothes when she stepped on a painful block, multiple blocks stacked. The pain subsided but her shock did not.

There just behind her was a beautiful castle, similar to hers. The small flower block at the entrance set proudly. Out of curiosity, she took the same purple block in the middle of the wall,

It didn't fall...

Jisoo awkwardly smiled, she found her situation funny more than anything. The little girl returned the block.

She took the stepping stool and placed it in front of the window where she can see Mr. Oh's house. The lights were lit up and shadows move on and about. A smaller shadow stared directly at her. Their curtains moved up and there stood the little Oh.

She waved. He waved. She apologized. He apologized. She smiled. He smiled.

She shouted, "Wanna play building blocks sometime again?!"

He shouted, "Sure!"

And so the night ended leaving little Jisoo of her newfound friend.
