Chapter 5

Lefou's POV

  I indeed do most of the talking to Belle and Prince Adam because I don't want a snarky remark to slip out of Gaston's mouth that would upset them and ruin the potential progress here. Both of them are being very mature about Gaston's presence here in the castle and Adam is willing to help guide Gaston on the proper path to righteousness. Gaston is led to his living quarters which is right across the hall from mine thankfully. The walls are thin enough that we'll be able to hear each other during the night, which is beneficial in case one of us needs the other. For example, I sometimes have terrible nightmares and seek the comfort of another human being from time to time. 

     Gaston doesn't have to start his first class with Adam until tomorrow so he's free to get settled in. It's midday right now, about four in the afternoon to be exact. Dinner is at six and it's being cooked by the kitchen staff as per usual. I smile softly at Gaston as I watch him unpack his few belongings that he had on him. Someone from the staff will retrieve any other belongings he needs in the coming days. Gaston has been advised not to do it himself so he doesn't cause an uproar in the village again. "Gaston, it's so wonderful to have you here. I think you're going to like it here eventually. Everyone has treated me with such respect and the castle is equipped with every possible resource needed to survive and more. The library is massive too, Belle gave me a tour and even let me hang out in there for a while the other night." 

      He nods. "I'm sure I will with you being here with me. It'll be an adjust though without a doubt. I'm used to my comfy cottage, staring up at my latest hunting kills while sitting with my feet up in my recliner, staring at my fireplace while downing a few beers after a long day of hard work." I chuckle. "You never know, you may be allowed to hunt on the grounds or in the woods eventually. You just need to do well in your first few sessions with Adam." He snorts. "It's weird to hear you being on a first name basis with him. I mean he's a prince and you're a commoner." I frown a bit and he immediately puts a hand over his mouth. "I'm so sorry Lefou, I didn't mean for it to come out that way." He sighs and sits down on his bed. 

       "I'm just not used to this grand life style. Beside being the cocky and arrogant man that I've been for years, I had to work to build the reputation that I formerly had in Villeneuve myself. Despite not being known as a hard worker, I did indeed work hard to convince everyone that I was worthy of being adored." I grab a hold of his hands and squeeze them in mine. "To heck with what the silly villagers think. You're doing an incredible thing by agreeing to become a better man. All that matters is what you think of yourself. As I said before, I'm not going anywhere either."  

         Gaston looks at me with warmth in his eyes. "You're the greatest gift that I've ever received Lefou. I don't know what I'd do without you. Having you here is going to make this transition period a lot easier for me. I'll be on my best behavior at dinner. I don't want to ruin this for you either." 

Dinnertime...

    A banquet of seafood is served. Everything from shrimp rings to lobster with butter cups is out on display. For dessert, several types of cheesecake along with some carrot cake too. I stare at Gaston's bewildered expression and laugh. I felt exactly the same way on my first night here too. The amount of food that is served for every occasion is baffling. For drinks, there are several types of alcohol to choose from, which then is broken down into subcategories. There are also nonalcoholic drinks like water, iced tea, hot tea, coffee, etc. Despite being hesitant to admit my faults to Belle and Adam at first, I do feel welcomed and safe here. I really hope Gaston comes around to feeling that way too. He stays mainly quiet during dinner but does answer questions honestly when asked by someone other than myself. He's already trying hard and I appreciate that so much.
