He has tears in his eyes, as she gently blows on his knee.
"Don't worry He Di, this is what my mummy does anytime I hurt myself."
They are in the playground at school, and in a rush to reserve the See Saw, their favourite pastime, He Di trips and falls. Chen Liang and Zhang Bo have now beat him to it, and his heart is sad. He loves to see Yue smile, when she sits opposite him, her ribbons blowing in the wind, both of them reaching for the sky, and floating down back to earth again.
She is now trying to clean the scrape on his knee, with the lemon drink from her juice bottle. It stings, and it's making He Di's leg feel sticky, but Yue is concentrating so hard on mending him, so he wipes his tears, puts on a brave face, and says,
"Thank you Yue, I feel so much better now."
Yue's whole face lights up and she squeals with delight.
"See... I told you that I had magic!"
Later that night, He Di is listening to his father tell him a bed time story. As his father turns the page, He Di asks,
"Daddy, is Yue a fairy?"
"Why do you ask my boy?"
"Because she looks like a fairy, just like in the storybook."
His father chuckles in his low comforting laughter. He puts the book down and removes his glasses.
"Well, you could say that some girls are like fairies."
"Yue is not like a fairy, she is a fairy!" He Di insists. "I know it's true, because she has something that those other girls don't have."
"And what is that?"
"She has magic."
"I see, and how do you know this?" Asks his father, highly amused at the determined expression on his young son's face.
"Because she told me!" He Di replies with such conviction, leaving absolutely no room for argument.
"Well then she definitely is a fairy, if that is the case." His father concedes, causing He Di to grin widely.
However, it's not long before he sees his son's smile falter. Concerned by this change in demeanour, he asks,
"What's the matter?"
"Will a fairy like Yue want to marry a boy like me?"
"Well you are 5 years old, so it's not something you have to worry about for a long time."
"But I do worry." Whines He Di. "You have my mom don't you, so you are fine, you dont have to worry. My mom looks after you and.... and...my Yue looks after me, but I don't want her looking after any other boy. The only way to make sure that she only looks after me, is to marry her. So I do worry Daddy, I worry very much." He finishes off quietly.
The little boy looks up at his dad, solemn eyed and droopy cheeked. This is really important to him, thinks his dad, his heart squeezing at the sight of him. And so he takes a deep breath and does his best to alleviate his son's fears.
"Alright son, of course she would want to marry a boy like you, because you are a really great guy."
In an instant, the smile as bright as the sun is now back, astounding in its glory. What magic he has himself, thinks his dad.
"Thank you Daddy." He Di yawns and turns away from his father. "Good night."
