Yue has not been going to the river for lunch, for the past two days. The truth is, she has been avoiding He Di since the pool, a few days ago. She cancelled Monday and Tuesday night's study sessions, saying that she had to attend a special lecture series, at the hospital she volunteers at. She technically did not lie about the lectures, however they are in a field of medicine she is not really interested in, so instead, she spent those two evenings at the retro cinema, watching an old Studio Ghibli romance anime, she and He Di used to watch all the time. She cried alone into her popcorn at both viewings.
When she got home that Saturday, after the pool, she started to think about all the emotions He Di was awakening in her, and became overwhelmed. Deep down she knows there is nothing more that she wants in this world, than to be with him... to be his best friend...his girlfriend... and someday his wife. But every time she allows herself to dream that way, she remembers the last two years, and the reasons why they stopped talking to each other.

2012
Yue and Jia are getting ready in Yue's room. It is He Di's birthday today, and they will be heading over to his house soon, to attend his party. He has invited his whole class, and his new friends from the basketball team.
"Are you ready to confess your feelings to He Di?" Asks Jia, brushing her hair.
"I'm so nervous. What if he only sees me as a friend, and then everything between us changes?"
"Babe, He Di is obsessed with you! Only sees you as a friend? Oh please, do you think he would be fine with it, if another boy wanted to hang out with you, the way he does? He barely puts up with me, because he always wants to be with you, and I'm your cousin! I'm not even competition, so if he only sees you as a friend, then he is a big idiot!"
Yue smiles feeling reassured by Jia's words.
"Do you think I should tell him I like him on his birthday though? Maybe I should wait for another day?"
"I think telling him on his birthday is the best present you can give him. Trust me, he will be so happy."
"Okay, okay, you are right, I'm just being nervous for nothing. This is He Di, he would never do anything to hurt me."
"Exactly! Now can we go please??? I really want to see what the boys from your school look like."
"Jia!"
"What? Not everybody can home-grow their own boyfriend, from since when they were 5 years old." She shrugs her shoulders. "Besides I just like looking at cute boys, you know perfectly well that you and I are not allowed to date just yet. It's such a good thing that your parents have known He Di since he was a little baby, so years from now, when you eventually tell them he is your boyfriend, they will naturally be more accepting of him." She sighs wistfully. "You are so lucky, the boy I loved when I was 5, I can still remember his name, Wu Xi Ze, I had to leave him behind because we moved to England. I wonder where his is now? He was really, really cute." She giggles.
