He Di has been rapidly unravelling in the past few days. Yue finally resumes the study sessions that same Wednesday night, after the river incident, and He Di is so excited to see her, having not seen her since Saturday. But she is strange. She is being perfectly nice to him, even laughing at his jokes, and seems very normal, but something is off. He can't quite put his finger on it, but there's a certain emptiness to the way she is interacting with him, like she is not fully there, like she is indifferent to him.
During their break, while they eat her mom's snacks, He Di says,
"I've missed you at lunch by the river this week... I waited for you these past few days.'
Yue stiffens. It's almost imperceptible, but He Di, who has been watching her so closely, notices it. She responds,
"Oh I'm sorry." She chuckles. "I was doing extra time at the hospital during my lunch break. I must have forgot to tell you."
"Oh ... it's been busy there hasn't it?... with the evening lectures as well..."
"Uhuh."
She takes a bite of a cookie and becomes quite absorbed in chewing it, while she marks the test she set for him.
"So... why was your phone off for all these days?"
"Oh, to be honest I didn't really notice. I misplaced my charger, and didn't get the chance to look for it, cos I've been busy with the hospital so...yeah."
She continues marking, eating another cookie.
"Will you be coming for lunch at the river tomorrow?"
"No I don't think so, still quite busy, probably for the rest of the week."
"Oh... okay.... Uh Yue, I wanted to ask you something?"
"Sure go ahead."
"Um... I was....I was wondering if you would...maybe....uh...maybe go to the dance with me next Saturday?"
"Oh that's so sweet of you to ask He Di, but unfortunately I had already signed myself up at the hospital. But I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding a date, you are such a handsome guy, ladies will be lining up by your locker, if you let them know you are looking. Ooh, there is this really pretty girl in my class, if you want I can talk to her for you? I know she would love to go to the dance with you."
She laughs generously at this last part and pinches his cheek playfully. He Di is feeling really uneasy now. Her rejection stings his heart, but what's worse, is her suggesting other girls for him.
"Yue, is everything okay?"
"Yes of course He Di, why would anything be wrong?"
"I've...I've been worried for these past few days, not hearing from you. I thought maybe I scared you off with... with what happened in the pool, when we...almost kissed."
