23 year old Yue gets off the plane at Heathrow airport, and quickly checks for her luggage. It's been a long flight and she is feeling pretty raw. She gets to the arrival area and searches the crowd anxiously. There she is, Yue is trying her hardest to breathe as she rushes into Jia's arms. She hugs her tightly and lets out a sob.
"Yue darling?" A concerned Jia hugs her back.
"Jia...oh this is so embarrassing, me crying like this in the Arrivals lounge."
"No, no sweetie its okay, people cry here all the time. Let's go to the car, here let me take your bag."
On the other side of the Atlantic, He Di is sitting in a locker room meeting his new team mates, for the first time. Having been scouted by the NBA in his final year of university, after representing China in the 2020 Olympics, he has now moved to the States to play professional ball. There is another Asian player on the team, and He Di wonders where he is from. He sighs as he is hit with a bout of homesickness... this is not how it was supposed to be. He's on a rookie contract for two years at the Boston Celtics, with the option to renew, but ever since he got here it feels like a life sentence. His thoughts are soon interrupted.
"Hi, my name is Wu Xi Ze. You are?"
He Di smiles when he hears the accent and the name.
"Chinese as well. My name is Wang He Di." He switches to Mandarin. "It's so nice to meet someone from home."
"Yes it is, I've been feeling so homesick. Please no formalities, just call me Xi Ze,because I feel like we could be brothers." He says, smiling widely.
"Call me He Di. Yeah definitely, I could certainly use a brother out here. Everything is so different from home."
"Hey, so training only starts next week, you wanna go to Chinatown tonight, grab some food and beers?" Xi Ze asks.
"Absolutely. That's the best idea I've heard since I got here. The restaurants near the housing they gave us, are pretty much fast food joints. Not so great for us athletes."
"Tell me about it. Here's my number, hit me up on WeChat, oh I mean WhatsApp."
They both laugh, He Di feeling relieved to find a piece of home, in his new team mate.
Yue is drinking tea in Yang Zi's apartment, which she will sharing with Jia, for the foreseeable future. Yang Zi is currently working out of the Paris office of her fashion magazine, for the next year, so she has let Jia move in with Yue, to keep her company. Yue is about to start her 3 year pediatrics residency program at Kings College Hospital. She has been an exceptionally brilliant medical student, and therefore was accepted in several residency programs, across the world. Kings College Hospital is the decision she has ended up making.
