16 year old Yue is coming out of the library with an arm full of books. A diligent scholar, she studies hard every night, even though exams are months away, because it's important that she gets good grades, as her dream is to study medicine after high school.
She is walking down the school corridor, when she sees He Di and his crew hanging out in the quad. He Di is now part of the basketball team, and one of the popular boys in school. He has become very tall and muscular, from all the training, and has also really grown into his features, his exquisite face even more appealing than before. Currently the three other boys he is with, are entertaining four girls, who are laughing loudly at whatever they are saying.
Yue, who has not grown in height since she was 13, is petite with large soulful eyes, and a naturally beautiful face that looks younger than her age. She is often told however, that she would be really hot, if only she wasn't so awkward and nerdy. Why doesn't she make herself look more girly, so that boys will like her, or maybe she should at least get rid of those childish dungarees she likes to wear during the weekends. All this and more, is the type of advice she receives from the 'well-meaning' girls from school... girls who have no idea what kind of person she is...girls with whom the only thing she has in common with, is the school they attend.
As she watches He Di clown around with the other three boys, Yue misses a step and trips. All the books tumble out of her arms, and she falls flat on her face. She hears the snickers of the girls, and the teasing noises from the boys, who are standing a few meters away from her.
He Di's first instinct is to run straight to Yue, when he sees her fall. But then he suddenly remembers that they don't talk anymore, and so he hesitates. Song Bei, one of the girls standing with the boys, who also happens to have a crush on He Di, sees this hesitation, and takes this opportunity to grab him by the arm. Startled, He Di looks at her with a confused expression, and Song Bei speaks.
"Wang He Di when are you going to stop playing with my feelings huh?" She giggles coquettishly.
"Huh? Games? Song Bei, what are you talking...."
"You know exactly what I'm talking about."
"I'm afraid I don't, but right now Yue needs my..."
"I'm talking about you taking your sweet time asking me to the school dance!"
"Uh Song Bei, I really..."
"Oh shoot, I have to go now , but yes I will gladly go with you to the dance next month! See you tomorrow, bye bye."
She blows a kiss at him and then beckons to her friends, indicating that its time for them to leave. The girls say their goodbyes to the other boys and walk away, giggling amongst each other.
He Di, who is puzzled by this whole exchange, turns to look back at Yue, but she is now walking past him, looking straight ahead, as if she does not see him. As usual this stings hims, he wants her to notice him, but his voice is stuck in his throat, and only a little too late, does he manages to faintly whisper her name to her retreating back.
