I received a letter of an apology from Sheze. He told me that there was an ambush from the opposing forces, so he would not be able to come home soon as he said at first.
I myself did not have the heart to tell him what was going on within the fiefdom, nor what was happening to me out of worry that I would distract him while he was at war.
"Lady Lilian, maybe you should get some rest," Koran said to me while I was in a daze.
"Huh? Rest..." I said confusedly.
When was the last time I rested?
The memories of the last operation and the pile of dead bodies kept on showing up in my nightmares. I found going to sleep counterproductive if I was going to wake up anyways.
"You have been up for two days straight," Koran said worriedly.
"I will go to sleep then," I said as I went to Sheze's room and slept for the first time.
Being enveloped in his scent allowed me to get the well deserved sleep I needed.
When I woke up from a two hour power nap, I was given some warm milk by the worried servants and asked to rest again. I ended up sleeping a total of six hours after that.
I quickly shifted back in gear and went back to my office with Koran.
"I was thinking of burning a village down," I said with a smile.
"Pardon?" Head Butler Hardy said confusedly.
"There is an abandoned village on the outskirts of the fiefdom that was abandoned by the government when a plague wiped out an entire village ten years ago. The houses are falling apart and the foundation is poor. Not to mention that the lack of sanitary conditions will only only re-invite diseases if people will decide to go back and turn it into the slums," I explained.
"Is this not also a preventative measure against the Arlanta Radicals?" Koran asked.
"They are the reason that I am hasting my plans because the abandoned village would give them time to recover from moving along the front lines as a cover for their troops. Even if it was an abandoned village, there are still various resources such as roofs, obvious weapons, transport vehicles, clean water sources and leftover provisions that can house them for awhile. We will just have to burn everything. Without the settlement, they will have to find another place to set up their base camp," I explained.
Willian Tecumseh Sherman reasoned that the most effective way to win a war was through destroying the enemy's ability to wage war. Not only does it physically cripple the other side, the strategy also psychologically weakens their will.
The strategy of destroying the food and water supply of civilian population in an area of conflict has been banned under Article 54 of Protocol I of the 1977 Geneva Conventions.
"I understand your rationalization behind your actions...What is this about your plans of expanding the sewage and water systems?" Koran asked.
There was not a very good system of irrigation channels or water system or people currently living there in the first place, so I had no qualms about burning a village down.
"There will be life beyond all of this. I want to look towards the future instead of the past. This is a good time to think about it at least," I said with a smile.
"You are thinking about the future of our people so sincerely," Koran said.
"To give Sheze's people good food and a place for their children to grow up safely is my ultimate goal. People essentially need a proper water source and sanitation source for their livelihood. After reading about the current preventative measures here about disease and damage control, I was truly appalled...Burning villages with dying residents and leaving them to die is such an awful piece of history," I explained with frustration in my voice.
