“I’m bored” Cooper whined from his place on the couch, where he was laying upside down with his long legs slung over the back of the sofa.

“I’m double bored.” Jeremy piped in.

“Sorry, not every second of your life can be entertaining.” Grant looked up from the paper for a moment to roll his eyes at the boys.

“Let’s play a game.” Jeremy said giddily.

“Yeah!” Cooper flipped right-side up. “Let’s play hide and go seek!”

“Are they seriously going to play hide and go seek?” Daniel leaned over to me.

“Yeah, I mean we’re all going to play. You don’t have to if you don’t want… the rest of us will all play though.” I shrugged.

“Isn’t that a game for kids?” Daniel asked skeptically.

“Not the way we play it.” I shrugged “Jeremy and Cooper tried to play it with some little kids one time and the kids ended up in tears because the twins wouldn’t let them win.”

“Do you wanna play Dan?” Jeremy popped up, oblivious to the conversation Daniel and I had been in.

“Um, sure. Why not?” Daniel shrugged.

“Okay, the rules are simple.” Cooper stood in the center of the room. As if this was some official sporting event “We’ll rock, paper, scissors for who is ‘it’ first. Then the person who is the seeker will go to the the center of the house, close their eyes and count to one hundred.”

After a few rounds of rock, paper, scissors and some bickering amongst the twins, it was finally decided that Cooper would be “it”. He proceeded to pout of to the coast closet which was the center of the house. As soon as we heard his loud counting begin we all scampered off in different directions.

I darted swiftly and as silently as possible up the the stairs. Once in the upstairs hall I surveyed my options. After a quick debate I pulled open the laundry room door, quietly pulling it shut behind me. Making sure everything looked the same as before, to avoid giving away my spot. There was a small gap in-between the washer, dryer and the wall. I climbed over the washing machine and slid into the space.

Seconds later I heard the door open. I could still hear Cooper counting, so I knew it wasn’t him. So I got onto my knees and peeked over the washer. Daniel stood at the door, looking instantly relieved to see me.

“TC, I have no idea where to hide.” he breathed, clearly short of breath from scrambling around.

“Well you better figure it out.” I smirked. “Sounds like Coop is at about 70 seconds now… provided he doesn’t forget where he is.”

“Not funny. I don’t know your house well enough. Let me hide with you.” he begged.

“No way! Get your own spot.” I said indignantly. “besides. There is barely enough room for me back here.”

    “90... 91...92”

“Please.” Daniel clasped his hands together, pleading with me.

    “96...97”

“Ugh, okay.” I sighed “Quick, close the door and be quiet about it!”

I stood up so that he was room. He swiftly scaled the washer and was now standing beside me. I could hear Cooper running around downstairs. I knew we still had time before he exhausted the downstairs and made his way up here. With the door closed it was now very dim, with only a bit of slight coming through the small window behind us.

“Um, okay. You’ve got to get situated first. Otherwise you’ll crush me.” I explained, trying to figure out the best way to fit both us in the already tight space.

“Is that a jab at my weight?” he scowled, but I knew it was a good natured comment.

“We don’t have time for you to be sensitive Daniel.” I rolled my eyes “Besides in not my fault your hips are so wide.”

“You really know how to hit right on a man’s insecurities.” he said playfully.

“Yeah, yeah. Now quit gabbing and sit down. I am not going to lose because of you!” I was incredibly competitive now matter what I was doing. Just because this was a ‘game’ didn’t mean I was going to lose graciously.

“I can’t help that my hips don’t lie.” he muttered like a spoiled child causing me to giggle. I was satisfied though because he was finally setting down onto the floor.

“Alright.” I surveyed my options of how to sit, but only found one “I’m going to have to sit on your lap. Just let me know if you’re uncomfortable and I’ll try and shift around, but there isn’t much else I can do. Once we are down we’re down for the long haul until Coop gives up. Which could be over an hour.”

“An hour!” Daniel gasped as I lowered myself gently only his lap, trying not to crush certain sensitive areas.

“I told you to find another hiding spot.” I said un-sympathetic.

“Okay, okay. I can do this.” he said encouraging himself.

“You better or else your racing career won’t last much longer after I break your kneecaps for making me lose.” I said reaching back and patting him on the cheek.

“Man, I forgot how comptetive you were.” he huffed.

“You miss it. That’s why I’m a winner.” I said confidently.

    “Yeah.” he mumbled.

I heard the long bounding footsteps of Cooper coming up the stairs, probably taking three stairs at a time. It was only seconds before he was in the hallway. Throwing doors open and thoroughly ransacking each room.

“Okay, you’ve got to be absolutely silent. Don’t even breath.” I hissed. I felt Daniel nod against my shoulder.

By my estimatation, Cooper was on the last room before the laundry room. I focused on keeping my breathing steady and silent. The laundry room door opened and light spilled into the room. Cooper took a few steps into the room. He opened the washer door and slammed it shut, then did the same with the dryer. I no longer felt the rise and all of Daniel’s chest. He was holding his breath. Good boy. I smiled. I could still feel Cooper’s presence in the room.

“I know you’re up here somewhere.” Cooper said loudly, trying to spook someone into giving away their spot. Daniel was perfectly silent though. I would have to reward him later.

Cooper exited the room, slamming the door behind him. Daniel expelled the breath he had been holding in. The air rushing by tickled my ear, causing me to giggle quietly.

“I guess some things don’t change.”

    “How?” I asked confused.

“We still make a beastly team.” he chuckled.

And that’s when I knew there was still hope.
