"I need your help with something."
Veronica slightly frowned. "What is it?"
He felt the need to further elaborate. "It might sound juvenile. And I might be asking for a lot. So, I need you to be honest with me if you don't feel like you can do it."
Her eyes narrowed. She didn't really like the tone. It wasn't intentional, but it made her feel like if she said no, it would be due to her incompetence rather her freedom of choice.
"Okay."
"I have this close friend of mine." He started slowly, as if trying to pick the perfect words, as if at any second he was going to retreat. "She's in a serious relationship right now, but I know she doesn't have the best dating record."
"Like Dan?"
He chuckled. "Except, after a breakup she has a hard time moving on. She easily gets sucked in and gets into this self-destructive behavior. No matter how many times it happens, she keeps investing so much time and energy into it even if she's getting nothing out of it."
"Who's your friend?" Veronica frowned, putting her drink down.
"I don't think you remember her. Her name's Elena Durant."
Her blood ran cold. She slowly lowered the bottle. "Wasn't she your girlfriend?"
Allen visibly tensed.
Hell no. She let out a sarcastic laugh. "If this involves a selfish request that only you will get anything out of, then I want nothing to do with it."
She started questioning the integrity of his words, whether he was exaggerating in his description of her naivety to get his way.
Her stare turned cold and he held it with an equal level of intensity to hide his distress. "It's not," he assured. "It's nothing like that, I promise."
She rolled her eyes. "I need a written contract, not an empty promise."
"Alright, I'll have it by your desk tomorrow morning," He jested.
"My nightstand works just fine, thank you." She tightly smiled, arms crossing against her stomach. "Anyway..."
"Anyway, I'm worried this relationship is not any different. The guy she's dating is a freelance filmmaker, and it's a huge advantage for him to be with her. He could get the publicity and get the help he needs from her dad to build his career."
Veronica frowned. She had no idea what he was implying. When she first heard about her and Allen being in a relationship, she went through her social media to see who she was but only got to look at her pictures to get the appeal, and know that her star sign was Cancer. She didn't get much as she noticed she was a pretty reserved person.
