It had been a while since the group got on a plane together.

Danielle loved airplanes and had to harass anyone - even passengers - just so she could take the window seat. Veronica was okay as long as she didn't think of the fact they were miles away from the earth and could plummet down at any miscalculation. Ethan would easily turn into the grumpiest version of himself because of his clogged ears. Allen would do anything to prevent himself from falling asleep in fear of experiencing a sleep paralysis episode with hundreds of people around. Chloe always had a bottle of Xanax to make the process easier for her - and everyone - and managed to fall asleep throughout it all.

The plane had landed on Charles de Gaulle airport and they were at the duty-free waiting for their connecting second flight that was in the next few hours.

Danielle had been indulging in candy, already throwing away the empty pack of M&Ms and opening the Skittles. She had dragged Ethan and Allen to help her look for a gift for Bilal since Veronica was in a dull mood and would much rather look for comics, and Chloe was praying and seconds away from passing out as the effect of the pill was wearing off.

"You're gonna get a sugar rush," Ethan warned, and Danielle slapped his hand when he attempted to steal them from her.

"Hands off." She glared, looking through the keychains. "You think he'd be interested in a Harley Davidson keychain?"

Ethan rolled his eyes and took a glance at Allen, who'd been awfully quiet. Now that the effect of alcohol had worn off, awareness kicked in and the need to question him grew.

"What's with you?" He probed, and Allen snapped out of his thoughts. He shook his head, giving a slightly defensive shrug.

"Nothing."

Ethan's eyes narrowed. The question was right at the tip of his tongue. He felt guilty and annoyed as he recalled what he told him about New Year's, but in his defense, the last thing he expected was for him to offer Veronica a job. Too many questions were posing in his brain, but a prominent one was tugging at his gut: why did he do it? Out of pity?

"Why did you offer Veronica the job?"

Allen snapped his head up to meet his intense gaze with surprise, Danielle freezing in place and twisting around to face them, feeling herself caught in an unwanted situation.

"What?" Allen blinked and Ethan tilted his head, features hard it made Danielle uneasy as she cleared her throat loudly, turning back around to the keychains.

"You think an Eiffel tower keychain is too cliché?" She spoke in a helpless attempt to distract herself and even - hopefully - them.

"I tell you she had a crush on you and you offer her a job. Why?"
