Chapter Five: Created
When I was a boy, here in Berk, we used to kill dragons. We slay them, chop off their heads like it was nothing to us. Like we didn't care about something losing its life. It was all brutal. Berk was a land of kill or be killed.
My mother thought peace was possible. She thought that this feud between Vikings and dragons can be stopped. She thought that no matter what, we will have peace of this world. That Berk will be the voice of peace.
Unlike my mother, when I was that little, I was on my father's side. Mostly because I wanted to fit in. And mostly because I want to make my dad proud as ever. I mean, I'm the chief's son! I have to have high expectations from everyone yet I kept failing. It was hard.
Then, I met Toothless, the Night Fury. The most unknown species that time as, in the Book of Dragons, don't have much information about it. It was a deadly species. Whenever we hear the high screeching pitch sound, we would always shout, "Night Fury! GET DOWN!"
The thing was vicious, all right. It never shows itself. Never steals food. And...never misses. That was the reason why I wanted to kill it.
And that was where my life began.
After a couple of hard working weeks, a battle between the Red Death and me losing a leg, it kinda turned out pretty well. Everything was the way it was.
But what reminded me today because of that was that the bond between Toothless and I was repeated today. Today, on this dragon academy, I can clearly see the bond.
The bond was clearly bigger than Snotlout and Hookfang. It was greater strength than Barf and Blech and Ruffnut and Tuffnut. And it had more friendshipness between Meatlug and Fishlegs.
It was equal to Toothless and I.
"Great, now just place your axe on her head and you'll be fine," Tuffnut instructed. We all gave him a look.
"What?!" Astrid exclaimed as the Deadly Nadder with blue and gold scales sniffed her. The Nadder was near to trusting her now.
I sighed. "Slowly reach your hand to it," I corrected, instructing.
"Really?" Tuffnut asked. "I thought she would take a sword now."
I sighed and completely ignored him since he was no help. Really, he's Tuffnut Thorston.
Besides me, I can see Fishlegs trembling while fiddling with his fingers. "Hiccup, I don't think she's going to make it," he whimpered, as usual. "She's trying to tame a dragon from Tracker Class and Sharp Class! It's a multi-tasking dragon!"
I shushed him by putting my hand up. He stayed quiet as I squinted my eyes to see the Nadder sniffing Astrid's hand. "She'll make it, I know that," I assured him.
I had an unsure feeling too. When we told Astrid she was going to train a dragon herself, everyone started suggesting different type of species for her. The others crowded her around as I stayed back, chuckling. After a couple of minutes of them torturing Astrid, I pulled them all back (even though I wanted it to go on forever).
Fishlegs then got the Dragon Book out for her to look for any dragons she would want to train. The book was filled with classes, species and the informations about them. Most of them were from Toothless and I's adventures of mapping the archipelago.
We then showed her around Berk, the special parts, dragons! We showed her the hangar, buffet food for them and our newest item: top of the line fire preventing stalls. I can tell that she was amazed by my all inventions. Well, some of it...Gobber, dad and the others helped too. But, hey, it was my invetions!
As we got the the stalls where my mom was at (she uses these stalls when she saves any dragons), Astrid started nodding to the fact that she would like to train a Deadly Nadder.
Her reason was that, first, she's deadly and the name of the species is in there too; second, she wants a dragon that can accompany her throughout and can fly fast. And last, that dragon species was the first dragon she kill when she was 5. Wow...that time, I was just learning how to eat food properly. Uh, not that I had problems with it anyway...
Astrid still had her hand out as the Nadder sniffed it more. I can tell it was having troubles trying to trust her. I mean, who could blame? No offence.
I saw Astrid close her eyes and look away...like I did eight years ago. The dragon was going to lean into her touch but pulled back slightly. I slowly widen my eyes at this. It then closed its eyes and touched her hand. That was one thing I knew. Another bond has been created.
"She did it?" he asked, unsure if it actually happened. He then saw Astrid's hand on the dragon's snout. "She did it!" Fishlegs shouted out, waving his tiny little arms.
The Nadder growled at Fishlegs' shouting, alarming it. I saw Astrid calming it down as it snorted a puff of smoke. All of us then went down.
"Nice job!" I complimented as I opened up the big door. "And I see you have scars from the dragon."
She looked dow to her arms. "Oh this?" she asked, pointing to it. "This was a few years ago. Just killing dragons as usual."
I rolled my eyes at her 'perfect shield maiden' thing. She can be really arrogant. This is why I need to play her. That and she's a challenge. A big one. It's like winning everything.
"Say, how about a flight?" I suggested. "Maybe I could teach you tricks here and there."
"Hey, how come you never do that to us?" Ruffnut complaint.
I sighed. "That's because you guys never listen," I answered and gave them a glare. They mutterly agreed.
"ASTRID!" someone called out. We all looked up and saw...uhm...what's his name? Plinn? Quinn? Riin? Yiinn? Con? Wait, how did I get that name?
"Coming!" she shouted back, defeaning my ears since she was right besides me. "You might have to teach me those tricks"- she looked up and down at me-"fishbone," she retorted. She then picked up her axe from one of the crates and slumped it over her shoulder.
"And the master of player just got owned!" Snotlout exclaimed, patting one of my shoulder as I just gave a blank look. "You playing her is failing so just step back and let the real man do the work."
He walked off after his 'pride' speech and walked out. He then tripped over and faceplanted. I laughed. Well, we all did as he just faked a laugh.
"Mean to do that," he added as he started walking off again.
Everyone started to leave also since it was getting dark. I looked up to see Astrid and her uncle still talking. Everything about her seemed perfect. The way she walks, talks and how she lugs that axe around. Not that I was admiring her, no no. I was investigating of her weakness. Wait, what is her weakness?
I smirked as I had another idea coming up. I'm going to find everything about her. Her weakness, strength, likes and dislikes. I'm going to have to be the one who she can trust. Who she can turn on when she needs help. And when she's at her worst...I'll be there.
But that will be broken up.
