Chapter Eight: Dealing Is Hard

=H I C C U P=

My father told me once that his own father made a deal with him. Be a better chief than himself, have a good life being chief and always have an heir and a wife. That was the deal he made to his father (for my grandfather) and that was the deal I made for him.

Of course, I don't think I can ever accomplish that. The two of them, I will. But the last...the last deal would be hard. Having to find just one woman in the entire archipelago to be my wife and have a child together was pressuring me. And I didn't like it.

At least, when my dad made the deal to his own father, it was easy for him. He already met my mother and was going to ask her, that same day he made the deal, to go out with him. And oh boy, that him courting my mother really went well. Look where it turned out!

I guess for me, in the Haddock generation, I was the 'curse'. You know, there's always one in every generation that didn't have luck like the rest of his or her family. And I was the one.

I always thought myself as an outsider. Even when I met Toothless and fitted in Berk. Even when my dad really was proud of me. Even when everyone finally noticed me, I was still an outsider and always will be. I guess that was why it's hard to find someone for me to love. Because, for my type and on her personality, I was trying to find someone who understood me for who I was and am and vice versa.

But, since I was about fifteen, I made that wish to Odin that one day... One day she'll come to my life.

Sunshine woke me up, blinding my eyes. That and Toothless' constantly thumping on the roof to go flying. He always does this everyday yet I can never get used to this.

"Hiccup get your dragon under control!" now dad hollered below the second floor. Great, the usual shouting. "Hiccup!"

I groaned and sat up before my dad could wake up the entire village. "I'm coming!" I shouted back, rubbing my face in exhaustion. I stood up and took my helmet. After a bit of tumbling and getting used at the diziness, I slowly went downstaris where I could see dad nearly in rage.

"Haven't I told you that dragon of yours need to have good manners?" dad spatted as he drank from his cup. I chuckled at his statement.

"Dad, they're dragons," I stated. "They don't know the etiquette of humans. It's like Vikings not knowing how to be posh."

Dad took another sip. "Well at least Skullcrusher can," he boasted. "I tell him something and he does it."

I shook my head. "You yell at him for it," I reminded. "You've got to be loyal to your dragon like he was your bestfriend. Like Skullcrusher is Gobber to you."

"I am loyal!" he exclaimed after he placed his cup down. He stood up, adjusting his belt as usual and went out the door. "Oh and I have a job for you and your friends. All of them."

I turned back to him. "What is it?" I asked.

"You and your friends have to farm at Mildew's house," he instructed. "I want there to be enough food for the winter so you all are resposible for it." Just then, he came back. I gave a hope in myself thathe was kidding but, as Loki was playing with me, he just instructed, "Oh and bring Astrid also."

I groaned at his instruction. Mildew's house? Farming instead of flying? Astrid with...

Oh shit!

Astrid with the other girls. As in with Mista! And the other girls! Shit! No, no, no. I paced up and down the floor as I heard mom come in. I ignored her and tried to think of a way to...avoid this. Surely Mista will and her girls would ruin Astrid for life. She's that evil.
