"Thought I might find you in here,"
I turned my head, guilty eyes hazed with the shock of the moment, the shyness of having all three of them looking in on us like that. My brothers frown, Blakes uncertainty and Van, eyes wide only for a moment. His pupils dark the next.
I watched him swallow a lump in his throat, and then he coughed.
"Camille," he said, voice a little scratched, like gravel or grit.
"Evenin boys," she said turning from the window only then, calm, her gaze drifting over each of them, smirking as she worked them out one by one.
I watched almost in awe, too nervous, too guilty for breaking all of my brothers rules so easily, to really appreciate the fines with which she worked them."Camille," Johnny cut through, his voice sharp, full of daggers. I couldn't tell who he was angry with, me, her or both of us, but his eyes were dark and his jaw was tight. Sharp like his tongue when he talked.
I looked up at the older girl, watched her simmer in the silence. She tapped her cigarette and watched the ash fall onto the sill.
Whilst I stubbed my cigarette out and watched my shoes, self-conscious and uncomfortable, Camille made us all wait in silence until she'd finished hers.
I dared a glance up at the three of them, caught my brother grinding his teeth, his irritability growing by the second.
And then when I dared a glance at Van he made me jump with his eyes already locked on me, brooding and dark, troublesome.I swallowed a lump in my throat, waiting for him to blink and study something else but he never did.
Instead he held my gaze with his stoney expression and even when i tore mine away, back to my shoes because i couldnt bare to look at the anger and dissapointment in my brothers eyes, I felt his eyes burning into me.
"Right," sighed Camille, dropping the end of her cigarette out the window, watching it fall before she finally turned around, "this'll be fun," she smirked rolling her eyes at me as she swept past me towards the lads. I watched as she stopped in front of my brother, looked up at him with eyes that knew him too well.
She could hold his gaze fearlessly even when the anger which brewed in his eyes was threatening to spill."What the hell Milly..." he started through gritted teeth, glaring down at her. Still his steely eyes didn't phase her and she pushed her hand to his chest, held it there. Held his gaze a moment longer. She said nothing but he understood anyway.
When he stepped asside he mumbled something to her which sent a shudder running down her spine, but when she paused in the doorway with a smirk on her lips she shot me a wink and left my cheeks burning with embarrassment because I knew she was about to take the blame for everything and get away with it. I still couldn't work out exactly how she managed that.
"Blakes do me a favour would you, go make that call for me, the one we talked about earlier yeah..." said Van, not once tearing his gaze away from me where I stood still leaning in the window, sort of frozen, sort of uncertain what my next move, or his next move was going to be.
Without Camille by my side I was suddenly much colder than I'd been before. Suddenly much more alone.
When Benji nodded and left, when Van closed the door behind him, a draft shuddered me, left me shivering, chewing my cheek a little nervously as Van put the latch back on.He turned to me then, leant up against the door and looked down at me, his chin held high, waiting patiently. As if he was expecting an apology or some kind of explanation for what they'd walked in on.
