Closing the door to her guest bedroom 37 year old Alexis Miller took a deep breath. Figuring that the young boy would be asleep for at least a few hours, she entered her living room - all the while praying that Mike would call soon with some news.
13 year old Mirabelle Watson sat on Alexis's couch, surfing through TV channels with a scowl on her face, while her 6 year old sister, Arabelle, was simply content as she played with her dolls.
Alexis smiled at the girls and asked, "Do you girls want an early lunch today?""No!" Mirabelle snapped, before Arabelle could even open her mouth.
"Well, you need to eat something Mira, you haven't eaten anything since last night," Alexis replied calmly.
"I thought that at least you would understand even if Dad is being unreasonable! I don't want food, I just want to go to my mother. And I'm sick of being treated like a child," screeched the teenager.
Nodding, Alexis remained quite. She didn't blame the girl for her outburst as she herself might have behaved in the same way if she was in Mira's position.
"Why is Mira shouting?" Arabelle asked timidly.
"She isn't shouting sweetheart. She's just voicing her opinions loudly," replied Alexis.
"I think that's the same as shouting Lexi."
Smiling, Alexis said, "You're too smart for me Princess Ara. Now, why don't you go put your dolls in my room and wash your hands. I'll make you a sandwich, okay?"
"Okay," said Arabelle as she left the room.
Alexis sighed and sat on the couch, opening up her arms. Hesitating for only a second, Mirabelle launched herself at the older woman and hugged her tight.
"Lex, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you. I j-just --"
"Sshh honey, it's okay. It's not your fault. I'll talk to your father to allow you to visit your Mom okay?" Lexi said, even as she knew that she might have to beat Mike into agreeing.
"You know Dad won't agree," said Mira through her tears, voicing Alexis's thoughts.
"Well, you and I both know that your father is a little scared of me, so he might just agree, okay?" Alexis chuckled. "Now, why don't you go check whether your brother is still sleeping or not and then wash yourself up. I'll make you something to eat."
Cracking the smallest of smiles, Mira reluctantly left Lexi's embrace and went towards the spare bedroom.
Rubbing a tired hand over her eyes, Alexis started collecting various toy cars, dolls, coloring books and blocks that were strewn about all over her condo in downtown New York. The children had always spent a lot of time at her place ever since they were born, more so in the last year, as their father dragged their mother all over USA to find a cure. Each doctor, in every state, gave them the same answers every time. But Michael Watson wouldn't hear a word of it as it wasn't the answer he was looking for.
