.................xxxxxxxxxx................
Alexis left a sleeping Mike on the sofa and tiptoed across the hall to her bathroom. Staring at her own reflection in the mirror, Alexis saw that her once bright chocolate brown eyes were now dull and tired. She never thought that at 37 she would be living in a condo, divorced and childless. But, here she stood, in that exact same life.
When her divorce to Drew Smith, her only boyfriend since she was 16, was finalized five years ago, Alexis found herself with nothing but rage and hatred towards her ex-husband.
She had lost count on how many times she had asked Drew when he wanted to start a family, how badly she had wanted to have a real family like Garrett had with his wife, Hailey (who was also Drew's sister) and their four children. Drew always replied with the same answers that all this time they had both worked too hard for their careers, so maybe they should now get to be selfish and enjoy each other for a while. And so, Alexis waited patiently for Drew to get his 'selfishness' out of his system.
However, it turned out that Drew was being a little more selfish than she had anticipated. She still remembered the day it all came to an end like it was yesterday. She had arrived home from a long day at work to find her suitcases packed and Drew sitting on the sofa wearing a torn shirt and a huge cut on his cheek. His nose seemed to be a little crooked as well. It looked like he had been in a fight of some sort.
"Oh my God!" Alexis exclaimed, seeing the state Drew was in. "What happened?"
Drew took a deep breath and said, "I've been seeing someone else for the past year and yesterday she told me that she's pregnant."
Alexis staggered backwards like she had been physically pushed. No words formed in her mind as she blankly stared at him. Her wavy black hair escaped from the loose braid it was tied in as she frantically shook her head to let his words seem real.
"I.....uh, I packed up all of your clothes. You can come and take your books and other stuff whenever you want to later this week," he said awkwardly.
"Ex-excuse me?" She finally managed to ask.
"Well, she has a small place and so we'll need a real house when the baby arrives. This house is in my name so......."
It left unsaid that he expected her to leave as quickly as possible.
"Wh-what? You can't do this to me!" Alexis blurted out incredulously.
Drew shrugged and said, "I'm sorry Alexis but, honestly, I love Sarah. I can't do this anymore, I can't be with you anymore. I'll start the divorce proceedings next week, after you've completely moved out."
Alexis shook her head, the memories were still bitter in her mind.
It was later, she found out, that his disheveled state was due to Garrett, who had beaten Drew up as soon as he had heard the news. Alexis, till this date, felt eternally grateful that Garrett and Hailey had chosen her over their own relative. She felt somewhat guilty over the rift between Hailey and her brother, but she was selfish enough to admit that she was thankful for the Greene's constant support.
Walking out of the bathroom, Alexis saw that Mira was standing over her father and was gently brushing a hand over his head. It was clear that the girl loved her father more than life itself and truly regretted her earlier outburst.
Looking up, Mira noticed that Alexis was leaned against the wall watching her. Alexis stretched out her arms slightly and Mira quickly accepted the invitation by running over to embrace her.
Pressing her head on Alexis's shoulder, Mira mournfully asked, "Everything's gonna change now, huh Lexi?"
Alexis ran a hand over the girl's straight black hair and sighed softly. "Oh sweetie, I'm afraid it already has."
