"They're here, Lexi!" Arabelle shrieked from upstairs. "Mommy and Daddy are home!"
As soon as the front door opened, Marvin ran over to his parents as quickly as his little legs would carry him. "Mama! Dada!" He squealed. "See, Mama, see! Car!" He exclaimed, showing off his toy car.
Delphina bent down and picked up her son, kissing his cheek as she took the car from him. "I see it Marv, it's a great car."
"Car!" He shouted again, smiling. "Dada, see car!"
Mike laughed and said, "Yes Marvin, I see it too. It is a car. You really need to learn new words, son."
Arabelle rushed over to her mother and hugged the woman's legs tightly. "Mommy, I'm so glad you're home. Daddy said you can't get better!"
Delphina put Marvin down and knelt down to give her daughter a proper hug. "Daddy is right, sweetheart. But, we're gonna make the best of the time we have together."
Ara sniffled, her tears threatening to fall. "Mommy, I don't want you to die. Please don't die!"
"Ssshhh honey," Delphina cooed. "We don't have to think like this right now, okay?"
She stood up and sat down next to Mirabelle on the couch. Calling Arabelle to her, she asked, "So, what did you do at Miss Alexis's yesterday?"
The young girl grinned broadly and said, "I drawed you pictures. They are on the kitchen table now. Do you wanna see them?"
"I would love to see the pictures you drew for me."
As soon as Arabelle ran out of the room, Delphina turned towards her eldest and said, "I'm sorry your father didn't allow you to visit me at the hospital. I hope you still aren't mad at him."
Mirabelle shrugged, flipping a page of the book she was reading. "I'm over it."
Lexi cleared her throat, giving Mira a disapproving look and pointed towards Delphina. Closing her book, Mira sighed and leaned her head against her mother's shoulder and whispered, "I'm sorry, Mom."
Arabelle ran back into the room and started showing her mother all the pictures she'd drawn. Even at six years of age the girl was a gifted artist and Mike had already enrolled her in art classes.
Alexis stood up and said, "Well, I should be leaving now. If you guys need anything, please just ask."
"Actually, Alexis, could you please join us for lunch?" Delphina asked suddenly.
"Uh..... I don't know, Delphina. You guys probably need to talk about a lot of things right now. Maybe some other day," Alexis said hesitantly.
"Please," Delphina requested, locking eyes with Alexis. "I'd actually like to talk to you. Alone, if I may."
Confused, Alexis turned to look at Mike, who in turn narrowed his eyes suspiciously at his wife.
"Please, Alexis," Delphina requested again, ignoring her husband's look.
"Umm, well, I guess I could stay then," Alexis said, biting her lower lip.
"Wonderful," Delphina replied, smiling slightly. She had a plan in mind and all she now needed was for Alexis to say yes.
