Alexis climbed out of Ara's bed and held her princess covers up as Ara squirmed to get underneath, propping and fluffing her pillows before she dropped the back of her head down with a plunk. Her little arms shot straight up in the air as Alexis pulled the covers up to her armpits. She pecked her lips with Ara's and smiled, smoothing a hand over the top of her head.
"Sweet dreams, Princess Arabelle," Alexis whispered with a smile.
"Lexi?"
"Yes, sweetheart."
"Can I ask one more question?"
"Of course."
Ara scrunched her little nose and lips, concentrating hard for a moment before she spoke. "Do you want to have your own babies? Cause I think you should….cause you'd be a good Mommy."
Smiling, Alexis perched herself on the edge of Ara's bed and covered one of her small hands with her own. "I used to want my own babies, yes. A long time ago."
"With Mister Drew?"
She gave a simple nod. "Yes, with Mister Drew. But sometimes.... things just don't work out the way we want them to. But even though we can be disappointed at times, we have to remember that everything happens for a reason, even if we don't understand it as it happens."
"Like with Mommy being sick?"
"Yes sweetie, like with Mommy being sick."
Ara sighed, then yawned as her eyelids fluttered shut. "Do you miss Mister Drew?"
"I used to," Alexis honestly replied. "But not anymore, no. I get sad sometimes when I think about what happened, but I'm not sad that we aren't together anymore."
"Do you think I'll ever stop missing my Mommy when she leaves?"
Alexis shook her head no, rubbing circles on the back of Ara's hand. "Your Daddy and I will never let you forget your Mommy. Ever. Besides….even if you tried to forget her, you couldn't."
"Really?" Ara asked, her eyes opening a bit wider for a brief moment.
"That's right," Alexis reassured her. "Because she's a part of you. Always."
Ara smiled at Alexis and squeezed her hand lightly. "Lexi, will you be mad if I called you Mommy someday?"
Alexis's eyes widened as she stopped breathing for a few seconds. Ara, oblivious to Alexis's inner turmoil, continued, "Cause I thought you'd like having someone call you Mommy and I won't have my Mommy anymore......"
Ara trailed off as Alexis quickly blinked back tears. "Honey, I....I -"
As Alexis struggled with word's, Ara sighed sadly and said, "I didn't wanna make you sad, Lexi. It's just.....Mommy said it'll be fine if I called you Mo-that. And I'm not saying I'll start calling you that now or soon..... I'm sorry, you got sad."
"Oh honey no," Alexis finally found her voice as she spoke up. "I'm not sad at all. In fact, I'd be honored and so very happy if you ever called me Mommy, I promise. And even if you never do, that's absolutely fine too. But, that's not a decision for now. Right now you need to sleep, okay?"
Ara nodded and smiled at Alexis, placated that she hadn't hurt the older woman in any way. "I love you, Lexi."
"And I love you. Mommy or not, I will always love you," Alexis swore as Ara beamed at her, blue eyes full of love. Alexis kissed Ara's forehead and stood up from the bed, reaching over to turn off her glass slipper shaped lamp on her nightstand. She wasn't more than halfway towards the door when she heard Ara's voice again.
