~Present Day~
Jess had been stressed out after going to the lab, it been 3 days and I'm not sure if she's even slept yet. Something wasn't sitting right with her about this case.
I was sleeping in Jessica's bed when I heard the front door open.
"Emma?" I heard Trish's voice call. I sat up and greeted her.
"Hey, what's up?" I said still feeling groggy.
"Where's Jess?" She asked.
"I'm not sure actually, I thought she'd be with you," I replied. Trish nodded.
"Good, I wanted to ask you for something..." She inquired.
"Sure Trish, what's is it?"
"You can find things right? With your power?" She asked. A wave of sickness waved over me.
"Yeah, why?" I questioned. Trish pulled out the papers from before with names on them.
"Could you find these people??"
"I mean... Hypothetically yes but-" Trish started to cut me off.
"If you found this person specifically," She handed me the paper, "They seemed to be a scientist there but records are wiped clean and even Jess can't find them," Trish said looking so hopeful.
"Yeah, I can try" I agreed.
"Jess can't know though, when I brought up the idea before she didn't approve," Trish added
~ 5 months earlier~
I had been spending a lot of time with Zach getting acclimated to everything. He had explained the way to do things and how I could help people while staying safe myself. He also explained that people with our power had rules to follow because it was easy to get lost in the other world... First, in order to travel safely, out of the shadow, you must release 'unnecessary' feelings... And thats why I had to let go of Jess, I had too much guilt for leaving that I might have traveled somewhere completely wrong. Second and last rule was no dead people... Trying to find a dead person would land you into purgatory, it's like the shadow but there are others there that are inhuman.
Zach and I are sitting on a couch together, ocassionally sipping some tea.
"How many times have you gone to purgatory?" I asked Zach, he and I both sitting in his cabin conversations.
"Too many," he laughed.
"How do you get out?" I asked.
"It's a little different Everytime but ignore anything that tries to talk to you, they aren't human. Think of a place you're so familiar with you would notice the slightest difference in it," he explained.
"When do I finally get a mission?" I asked.
"You'll get a letter from the organization soon, you met Zaff right?" He asked.
"Yeah, business suit guy," I responded.
"He assigns us, like how he assigned you here on my request,"
"You asked for me to be here?"
"It's extremely rare to have someone with similar abilities," Zach turned to me on the couch and leaned in closer, I was unprepared for what Zach was going for. He kissed me once and pulled away almost looking for my reaction.
"...was that okay?" He asked softly. I realized I looked like a statue just standing there silent.
"Uh, yes.. I just have never done that before,"
"Oh, I mean.. did you like it?" I ignored his question and kissed him back for a response. He smiled a smile I hadnt seen from him before, it was like pure happiness on his face.
"I should go, I think Ruby cooked something delicious again," I said.
Zach nodded and I walked back to my cabin. As I walked through the door I was hit with several savory smells.
"Smell great in here! What'd you make?"
"Oh just some steaks and mashed potatoes," she smiled. "So.... How was it with Zach?" She said in a presumptuous tone.
"He kissed me!" I blurted. Ruby gasped. "Then I kissed him back!" I quickly added. Ruby's eyes widened with amazement.
"Well... Did you like it?" She asked finally.
"I did,"
