Still God's POV
The next day, Antonio, Voight, Upton and Atwater drove to the hospital whilst Ruzek and Burgess went to the gang's house. They were all stressed and confused. Had Jay kept a lot from them? If he did, why? Had he screwed up this undercover gig by doing something he shouldn't have? Either way, Voight would fight to hell and back for Halstead. The Sergeant knew his detective has a heart of gold and would do anything to protect people who deserve to be protected, even if it cost him his job. Voight knew that Jay believed Amelia was worth saving, for some reason which he had to find out today.
Antonio and Hank went to Jay's room, who greeted them with a half smile on his beaten up face.
"You look fabulous, Halstead." Antonio sarcastically complimented his co-worker, making Jay scoff and flip him off. "How're you feeling?"
"Meh, kind of like I got shot. Weird right?" Jay joked, reassuring his partners. If he was able to joke and be sarcastic, he was on his way to recovery.
"Listen, we've got to ask you a few questions that you might not like but we need you to answer with as much detail as you can." Antonio informed his colleague, Jay furrowing his eyebrows, confusion written all over his face.
"Alright?" He answered, sitting up a little more.
"How'd you meet Ava?" Antonio asked, "Precisely."
Jay let out a soft chuckle, "What? Why do you need to know that?"
"Jay, answer." Voight ordered, not in the mood for playing around.
Jay rolled his eyes and raised his hands up in surrender, "At a club. It was my first meeting with the gang and she tipped me off on how to impress Charles."
"Did you talk to her any further that night or was that all?" Antonio continued, looking for something she might have said or done that would back up the theory that she was lying about being a detective.
"Yeah. She was told to bring me to a VIP booth for a dance and to make me take drugs." Jay vaguely answered, Antonio gestured him to keep going. Jay sighed and continued, "She asked if I wanted to try out the product and I hesitated. She didn't care though, just told me to act like I was high later and just put the packet away. We just talked, she didn't even want to be there let alone do what she was told. Told me she was stuck there because she knew too much or something."
Antonio glanced at Voight before asking something else, "What was her role in the gang? What did she do for them?"
"Mostly took care of the girls and the house. That one time I drove her to the motel they use for prostitution, she came back with money and the other girl was missing but I'm pretty sure she hadn't done anything in there. She's mostly a punching bag for them though."
"Why do you think she didn't do anything?" Antonio asked, finding it weird that Jay wasn't picking up on the weirdness of it all.
"She seemed sad when she got into my car but I don't know, I had a feeling nothing happened because she still smelt like perfume, her hair was still looking good, her clothes weren't out of place. She looked the same. I think she mostly went there to get the girls out, not to work." Jay rubbed his face with his hands.
"How'd she get the girls out?" Voight asked.
"Don't know, she slipped up once and told me Charles put a chip inside of them when they came into the gang. She said there must have been a doctor on the outside to help them. I don't think she was helping them out on her own. Plus, the client she was supposed to meet, it was supposedly the only client she accepted." Jay explained, suddenly something clicked in his mind. "Oh my god."
-
"Hi, Natalie!" Upton greeted the brunette woman who turned to her with a smile.
"Hi Hailey, hi Kevin! How are you?" She greeted them, smiling.
"We're good, thanks. Listen, we need to ask you a few questions about Ava." Atwater told her and Natalie nodded as she brought them to an empty conference room so they could talk in private.
"Shoot." Natalie said and the two detectives started off by asking if Will should be here as well. "No, Will only met her yesterday. He knew of her from what Jay had told him but he never met her before."
"What about you? How did you meet her?" Upton asked the doctor softly.
"Jay came in with her one night, in complete panic." The detectives were surprised by that, but kept listening, "He called for Will but after the nurses saw how she had been hurt, they called me as well."
"How was she hurt?" Atwater asked, taking a chance even if there was the doctor-patient confidentiality thing.
"I'm sure you can figure that out without me telling you, Detectives. She needed female doctors." Dr Manning told them suggestively. She couldn't actually tell them because they weren't investigating a murder or something, they were investigating a woman.
"What was she like?" Upton opted for a less personal question.
"She was tensed when I entered the room. I mean, she was surrounded by people- men- she didn't know checking her out and all." She sighed, "Told them to get out and that I'd take over. I reassured her and stitched her up. She confided in me about things that happened to her over there and uh, told me something about having a chip inside her?"
"A chip?" Atwater asked, surprised.
"Yeah, so they wouldn't flee. But she said she'd been helping girls get out. I don't know how but that's what she told me." Natalie answered, knowing that prostitutes don't usually have chips inside of them.
"Is that why she couldn't leave?" Upton asked.
"Apparently. She seemed to be slightly depressed as well, she even told me that nothing that could happen to her would be worse. It seemed to me like she had lost all type of hope, until Jay came into the room to check on her." Natalie smiled slightly.
"What do you mean?" Upton asked, wanting to know more about her partner and Ava's chemistry.
"She smiled for the first time when he walked in and her eyes practically glowed with hope. I think he became her anchor through this. She trusted him and he helped her. He didn't even ask for details he was just there with her. I think their relationship was pure, completely platonic."
Upton and Atwater smiled at this, knowing Jay had such a heart of gold and would fight for anyone.
"Alright, well thank you for you time. Call us if you see her around." Upton smiled at Natalie as Atwater thanked her as well. They left the room and met with Voight and Antonio in Jay's room.
"Hi," Upton greeted them and turned her glance to Jay, seeing him in complete shock. "You told him?"
"He figured it out." Antonio mumbled back at her as Jay spoke out.
"So Ava is not Ava and you've lost track of her?"
"Well, put like that," Atwater trailed off, sighing, "Yeah kinda."
"But you said Burgess and Ruzek are at the house, right?" Jay asked and the team nodded, "Then tell them to find the computer that's in charge of tracking the chips. Chances are she still has hers."
Voight left the room to call Adam and Kim, telling the team to get ready to head out. Antonio thanked Jay and told him they'd inform him of any news.
Jay was tired, hurt and mostly confused. How the hell did he miss this?
